How the BMI Calculator Kg Cm works
This BMI calculator kg cm version works in metric only. Type your height in centimetres and weight in kilograms and the BMI appears as you type, with the adult category and the weight range that would put you between 18.5 and 25 at your height. This page is metric only; the main BMI calculator handles feet, inches and pounds.
BMI calculator kg cm: the formula in metric
Body mass index is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Height is usually known in centimetres, so divide by 100 first: BMI = kg ÷ (cm ÷ 100)². For 70 kg at 175 cm, 175 becomes 1.75, squared is 3.0625, and 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9. If you prefer to skip the conversion, multiply by 10,000 instead: 70 × 10,000 ÷ (175 × 175) = 700,000 ÷ 30,625 = 22.9. Both give the same answer, and the second avoids decimals until the last step.
How to calculate BMI in kg and cm by hand
Square the height in centimetres, divide the weight in kilograms by that figure, and multiply by 10,000. The one step people skip is the squaring: dividing 70 by 175 gives 0.4, which is meaningless. A quick sanity check is that adults almost always land between 15 and 45; anything outside that means a unit slipped, most often a height typed in metres, which the calculator accepts as long as it is written with a decimal point such as 1.75.

Why the metric version is the real one
BMI was defined in kilograms and metres, and the imperial formula's 703 is nothing more than the conversion factor that makes pounds and inches give the same number. Working in metric means no rounding from unit conversion, and the healthy weight range comes straight out as kilograms: 18.5 × height² to 24.9 × height², with height in metres. At 1.70 m that is 53.5 to 72.0 kg.
Reading the result
The adult categories from the World Health Organization are under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 and over obese, with obesity subdivided at 35 and 40. They are population screening thresholds. The index cannot tell muscle from fat, does not know your age, sex or ethnicity, and cannot see where the weight sits. A waist under half your height is the simplest complement; the pages for women, men and children cover the adjustments each group needs.
Metric BMI examples
First example. 92 kg at 183 cm: 1.83 × 1.83 = 3.3489, and 92 ÷ 3.3489 = 27.5, overweight.
Second example. 48 kg at 163 cm: 1.63 × 1.63 = 2.6569, and 48 ÷ 2.6569 = 18.1, just under the 18.5 healthy floor.
How many kilograms short is that? 18.5 × 2.6569 = 49.2 kg is the bottom of the healthy band, so about 1.2 kg.
FAQ
What is the BMI formula in kg and cm?
Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. With height in centimetres, either divide by 100 first or use kg × 10,000 ÷ cm². For 65 kg at 168 cm: 65 × 10,000 ÷ 28,224 = 23.0.
Can I type my height in metres?
Yes, as long as it includes the decimal point, such as 1.68. The calculator reads the number you give it as centimetres, so 168 and 1.68 give the same result only because 1.68 is obviously not a height in centimetres; type 168 to be safe.
What is a healthy weight for 170 cm?
53.5 to 72.0 kg, which is BMI 18.5 to 24.9 at 1.70 m. The calculator shows the equivalent range for any height you type, and the chart above lists it for every 5 cm from 150 to 195.
Why does my result differ from another calculator by 0.1?
Rounding. Some calculators round height to the nearest centimetre or the result to the nearest whole number, and some convert to imperial internally and back. This page uses the exact metric formula and rounds only the final figure to one decimal place.
Where do I enter pounds and feet?
On the main BMI calculator, which has a units switch and accepts heights written as 5'10". This page is deliberately metric only, for people who know their measurements in kilograms and centimetres and want no unit switch in the way.
