Data format

Every page reads comma-separated text with a header row. The first column is the label or the x value; the columns after it are the numbers to plot. Paste from Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets and the tabs are converted to commas for you. Numbers are read as numbers, and anything that looks like a date on the line and area pages is read as a date so the axis spaces it correctly. Each page starts with a small sample so you can see the expected shape before pasting your own.

Which chart

A bar chart compares categories; a line chart shows how a value moves over time; an area chart is a line chart when the total matters as much as the trend. Pie and donut show parts of a single whole and are best kept to six slices or fewer. A scatter plot shows the relationship between two numeric columns, and a bubble chart adds a third as the size of each point. A histogram takes one column of raw measurements and counts how many fall into each bin, which shows the distribution rather than the individual values.

Colours and labels

The Colours menu switches between a bold set, warm, cool, pastel and greys, and the same palette runs through every page so a set of charts for one report matches. The title sits above the chart, the axis labels beside the axes, and a legend appears whenever there is more than one series. Text uses the system font, so the SVG renders the same in a browser, a slide deck and a vector editor.

Export

SVG is the format to reach for when the chart is going into a document, a slide or a web page: it is text, it is small, and it stays sharp at any size. PNG is for chat, email and anywhere that will not take vector; the size menu chooses 1×, 2× or 3× the preview width. Copy SVG puts the markup on the clipboard for pasting into an HTML file or an editor. All of it happens in the browser; the data is never uploaded, and reloading the page clears it.
