Map and GPS Tools

Measure Distance, Map Area, GPX Viewer and Coordinate Converter

Every tool here puts an OpenStreetMap map in the page and does its work on top of it in your browser. Click to measure a distance or an area, drop a radius around a point, read the coordinates under the cursor in decimal, degrees-minutes-seconds and UTM, open a GPX or KML file from a watch or a phone to see the route, its length, its climb and its pace, convert between the file formats, or lay out a city map as a poster and download it. The only thing that leaves your device is the request for the map tiles themselves; the file you open and the shapes you draw never do.

Measuring

The map distance measurer turns clicks into a route and adds up the great-circle length in kilometres, miles and nautical miles, with each leg listed. The map area calculator closes the same clicks into a polygon and reports square metres, hectares, acres, square kilometres and the perimeter — useful for a paddock, a roof or a block of land when no survey is to hand. The radius map draws a circle of a chosen distance around a point, for delivery zones, travel limits and "how far is 5 km" questions.

Coordinates

The coordinate converter takes a position in decimal degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds or UTM and gives the other forms, with a marker on the map to confirm it is the place you meant; the latitude and longitude picker works the other way, turning a click or a dragged marker into coordinates you can copy or paste into a link.

GPS files

The GPX and KML viewer opens a track from a running watch, a cycling computer or a mapping app and shows the route, the waypoints, the distance and the time. The elevation profile charts the height along the same track with total ascent and descent, and the route pace calculator breaks a recorded run or ride into kilometre splits with pace and speed. The GPX converter rewrites a file as KML or GeoJSON for software that wants a different format, and the GeoJSON editor shows any GeoJSON on the map and lets you add points and edit the text side by side.

Making pictures

The draw on a map tool adds lines, markers and labels for a hand-drawn direction sketch and exports the result as a PNG, and the map poster maker frames a city at a chosen zoom with a title and coordinates for a print.
