Depth of field and hyperfocal distance
The depth of field calculator takes focal length, aperture, focus distance and sensor format and returns the near and far limits of acceptable sharpness, the total depth, how it splits in front of and behind the subject, and the hyperfocal distance for landscapes. The table shows depth of field across the aperture range so you can see where diffraction and background blur trade off.
Exposure value and equivalent settings
The exposure calculator works out the exposure value of an aperture, shutter speed and ISO, names the kind of scene it matches, and converts the combination to an equivalent exposure at a different aperture or ISO, reporting the change in stops. The table lists the shutter speed needed at every full-stop aperture for the same exposure.
Crop factor and field of view
The crop factor calculator compares any sensor with full frame, gives the full-frame equivalent focal length and aperture, and calculates the horizontal, vertical and diagonal angle of view along with the frame width at a set distance. The table shows what the same lens covers on every common format from medium format to phone sensors.
BPM to milliseconds
The BPM to milliseconds calculator converts a tempo into the length of every note value in milliseconds, with dotted and triplet variants, the matching LFO frequency in hertz and sample counts at 44.1 and 48 kHz, for setting delays, compressor releases and reverb pre-delay in time with a track. Enter a delay time instead and it finds the tempo.
Note frequency
The note frequency calculator converts a note name such as C#3 to its frequency, MIDI number, wavelength and period at any concert pitch, or takes a frequency and identifies the nearest note and how many cents off it sits. The table lists every note in the same octave.
Music intervals
The music interval calculator names the interval between two notes, or transposes a note by a number of semitones, and shows the size in cents under equal temperament next to the just-intonation ratio and how far the two differ. The table lists all thirteen intervals above the starting note.
Audio bitrate and file size
The audio bitrate calculator multiplies sample rate, bit depth and channels into an uncompressed bitrate, gives the data per second, minute and hour and the size of a recording of any length, and shows the Nyquist frequency and dynamic range the settings imply. The table compares common formats from telephone quality to multitrack sessions.
