What the section covers

Science fiction names come in more shapes than fantasy ones because the genre borrows from more places. A space opera wants a starship with a grand name and a hull number, an alien species with a name a human mouth can nearly say, and a planet in a system with a Greek letter in it. Cyberpunk wants a handle, a corporation with a portmanteau name and a drug or a chip with a brand. Military sci-fi wants callsigns, squadron names and operation codenames. Hard sci-fi wants the real catalogue formats: a star with an HD number, an exoplanet with a lower-case letter, a spacecraft with a registry. The pages here cover each of those, one job per page.

How the names are built

Each page carries a set of patterns and the word lists to fill them, and a click picks a pattern and fills it at random. Alien and character pages use syllable tables tuned to sound alien without being unpronounceable; ship and station pages combine a name class (virtues, birds, myths, places) with a prefix and an optional number; designation pages build from letter and digit lists so the results have the right shape, TK-421 or HD 209458 b, rather than being random strings. Where a page has distinct styles, such as a military versus a civilian ship or a corporate versus a street handle, it has a select for them.

What the names are for

Tabletop games, video game characters, novels and short fiction, worldbuilding wikis, and the more mundane job of naming servers, projects, Wi-Fi networks and test accounts. The count field lets you generate a whole crew, a whole fleet or a whole star system in one click, and the results are easy to copy.

Originality

The lists are original. Nothing is lifted from a franchise, and where a page describes a type of name that a franchise made famous, such as the letter-digit trooper designation, it describes the general format rather than reproducing a trademarked list. A random result can still coincide with a name in a book or a game, so check before using one commercially.
