What the section covers

The section is in five parts. The geography pages name places at every scale, from a street to a country, in the shapes real maps use, so a fictional town sounds like it has been there for centuries. The vehicles-and-animals pages name the things people christen, boats, cars, planes, trains, horses, pets and plants, in the affectionate, joking or grand registers owners actually use. The team pages cover sports clubs, fantasy leagues, pub quiz tables, running clubs and esports rosters, each with its own conventions. The title pages produce book, song, album, film, TV, poem, story, chapter and painting titles in the patterns each form has settled on. The product-and-colour pages name perfumes, cocktails, dishes, paint colours, nail polishes, lipsticks and fonts, and the final group covers storm names, codenames, passphrases and the random pickers.

How the names are built

Every page assembles names from original word lists in the shapes its subject uses: an old English element plus a settlement suffix for a town, a saint or a trade for a street, a pun or a pair of words for a boat, an adjective plus a noun for a paint colour, The plus a noun for a novel, a colour plus an animal for a pub team. The lists are ordinary words, invented place elements and common given names, so a generated name is a new combination rather than an existing place, product or title; a short title or a place name may coincide with a real one by chance, and the pages say when to search before you use one. The random pickers draw single words from curated lists with a filter for the kind of word you want.

Titles and matching pieces

A title needs an author, a place needs people and a team needs players. The People section names the characters, the Business section names the shops and companies on a generated street, the Fantasy and Sci-fi sections name the invented worlds a fictional city might sit in, and the Online section names the handle a team or a band might use. The passphrase page here sits beside the Password section's passphrase tool, which builds a passphrase you can actually use.

Privacy

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type or generate is sent anywhere, and no page checks whether a place, title, product or team name is already taken.
