How the word game tools are organised

Scrabble and board games finds and scores words from a rack of tiles, with blanks, for Scrabble and Words With Friends, and lists every word that can be made from a set of letters. Puzzle solvers handle daily puzzles with fixed rules: Wordle, Spelling Bee, crossword patterns and word ladders. Anagrams and rhymes rearranges letters into words and phrases and finds words that sound alike.

One open dictionary

Every solver except the rhyme finder uses ENABLE, the Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon, a public domain list of 172,823 English words that many word games were built on. It covers the words people play without the proper nouns and abbreviations that games forbid. The rhyme finder uses the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, which records how words sound rather than how they are spelt.

Nothing leaves your device

The word list downloads once, about 250 KB compressed, and every search then runs locally. Your letters, guesses and puzzles are never sent to a server, and the solvers keep working offline once a page has loaded.

FAQ

Is the dictionary the same as the official Scrabble one?

Not exactly. ENABLE is close to the North American tournament list but not identical, and the Collins list used outside North America has many more words. A word found here is almost always playable, but check a disputed word against your game's own dictionary before challenging.

Why does a word I know not appear?

ENABLE leaves out proper nouns, abbreviations, hyphenated words and most words coined since the late 1990s, because word games do not allow them either. Very rare inflections can also be missing. If a game accepts a word that is not listed here, the game's own dictionary is the one that counts.

Is using a solver cheating?

In a rated or friendly game against another person it usually is, unless everyone agrees. Solvers are best for checking a finished game, learning short words and high-value plays, settling an argument, or getting unstuck on a daily puzzle you play alone.
