How the Clothing Size Converter works

This clothing size converter covers the main international systems. Type a size from a label and pick the kind of garment. Because a plain "8" is a US size on one label and a UK size on another, the page shows every reading of the number you typed, each with its equivalents in the other systems. Sizes vary between brands and between cuts within a brand, so treat every result as the starting point for the brand's own chart, not a guarantee of fit.

Clothing size converter: why one number means three things

A size on a label is not a measurement. It is a code, and each country wrote its own codebook. A women's "8" is a medium in the US, a small in the UK and Australia, and does not exist at all in the French and Japanese systems, which use 36 or 40 and 9 for roughly the same body. Men have it easier on jackets, where the English-speaking world uses chest inches, but shirts switch between collar inches and collar centimetres.

How the converter works

The page holds three fixed charts, one per garment type. When you type a size, it searches every column of the chosen chart for that value, and every hit becomes its own result line. So "8" under women's clothing returns two readings, because 8 appears in both the US and the UK column.

There is no formula in the arithmetic sense, because the systems were set independently, but the steps are regular. Women's sizes step by 2 in the US, UK and EU and by 2 in Japan, with EU = UK

Worked examples

Example 1: a women's "40". Under women's clothing this returns two lines. If 40 is the EU or French size, it is US 8, UK and AU 12, IT 44, JP 13, letter M. If 40 is an Italian size, it is US 4, UK 8, EU 36, JP 9, letter S. The two are two full sizes apart.

Example 2: a men's suit 40. US, UK and AU 40 is EU and Italian 50, a chest of about 102 cm, letter M.

How many readings can one size have? Up to one per column. A letter such as M gives two women's rows, US 8 and 10. Women's and men's jacket sizes from the converter's charts

How to read the result

Each line starts "If 8 is US" or "If 8 is UK / AU", naming the system the tool assumed, then lists that size in every other system in the chart. Where no column contains the value, it says so and points to the chart; an EU collar of 40 is not listed, because shirtmakers cut 39 and 41 and label 40 inconsistently. The last line is the caveat, and it is meant literally.

Tips and pitfalls

Measurements in inches convert with the cm to inches converter. For footwear and jewellery, use the shoe size and ring size converters.

FAQ

What is a US size 8 in UK sizes?

A US women's 8 is a UK and Australian 12, an EU and French 40, an Italian 44 and a Japanese 13. Going the other way, a UK 8 is a US 4. The offset of four is the usual source of confusion when shopping across the Atlantic.

Are Australian sizes the same as UK sizes?

For women's clothing, mostly yes: Australian brands use the UK numbering, so an AU 10 is a UK 10 and a US 6. Some Australian labels run half a size larger than the UK equivalent in practice, which is exactly the sort of brand variation the chart cannot capture.

What is a European 50 in a men's suit?

An EU 50 suit or jacket is a US and UK 40, meant for a 40 inch or about 102 cm chest. The EU number is roughly the chest in centimetres divided by two, and the US number is the chest in inches, so the two scales stay in step across the whole range.

Why does the same size fit differently in different shops?

Because the size label is a convention, not a measurement, and each brand chooses the measurements behind it. Vanity sizing, target market and cut all move the numbers. Where a brand publishes the chest, waist or hip measurement for each size, use that rather than the label.

Does the page cover children's or plus sizes?

No. Children's clothing is sized by age or height and does not convert by a fixed offset, and plus-size ranges use their own numbering that varies more between brands than standard sizes do. For those, the brand's measurement chart is the only reliable guide.
