How the Romanian Name Generator works
This Romanian name generator makes Romanian names with the surnames that mark a name as Romanian, Popescu, Ionescu, Dumitrescu, Munteanu, Ciobanu, and given names in Romanian spelling, Ioana, Andrei, Ştefan, Gheorghe. Modern gives the names of today's children, Classic those of the village generation. Choose female, male or either and generate up to a hundred.
How the Romanian name generator works
Romanian is a Romance language, a survival of Latin at the eastern edge of the empire, and Romanian names show it. The given names are the Latin and Orthodox stock in Romanian form: Ion for John, Gheorghe for George, Vasile for Basil, Dumitru for Demetrius, Constantin, Nicolae, and for women Maria, Elena, Ana, Ioana, Ecaterina. Romania also kept a Roman streak that no other country has, giving Traian, Aurel, Octavian and Ovidiu as ordinary names in memory of the province of Dacia. The modern stock has shortened and internationalised, Andrei, David, Luca, Matei, Sofia, Daria, Antonia, but the Romanian forms Ştefan, Ionuţ, Rareş, Dragoş, Ilinca and Teodora keep their place.
The surnames have two main types. The patronymic ending -escu, son of, produces the famous names, Popescu the priest's son, the commonest surname in Romania, Ionescu son of Ion, Dumitrescu, Constantinescu, Georgescu. Then come the bare first names used as surnames, Stan, Radu, Gheorghe, Dumitru, Marin, Matei, Constantin, which are as common as the -escu names and easy to mistake for given names. The second list holds the origin and trade names in -eanu and -aru: Munteanu from the mountains, Moldoveanu from Moldavia, Ardeleanu from Transylvania, Olteanu from Oltenia, Ungureanu the Hungarian, Rotaru the wheelwright, Ciobanu the shepherd, Fieraru the smith. A Romanian roster with only -escu names is a cliché; the real mix is about a third each.
Romanian names do not change for gender. Maria Popescu and Ion Popescu share the surname unchanged, and there is no patronymic, though the older generation often carried a father's initial between the names, Ion I. Popescu, which is still seen on documents. Spelling uses ă, â, î, ş and ţ, and the comma-below forms ș and ț are the official ones though the cedilla forms remain common; the names here use the widespread cedilla forms.

FAQ
What does -escu mean?
Son of. Popescu is the priest's son, from popă, Ionescu is Ion's son, Dumitrescu is Dumitru's son. It is the Romanian equivalent of the Slavic -ov and the Spanish -ez and is the most recognisable Romanian surname ending.
Why are some surnames just first names?
Because many Romanian families took the father's given name as a surname without any suffix when surnames became fixed in the nineteenth century. Stan, Radu, Gheorghe and Dumitru are among the commonest surnames in the country.
Do Romanian surnames change for women?
No. Unlike Czech or Russian, Romanian surnames are the same for men and women. Elena Popescu and Andrei Popescu share the name unchanged, and a married woman takes her husband's surname in the same form.
Why do Romanians have Roman names?
Because Romania takes its name and its language from the Roman province of Dacia, and the nineteenth-century national revival encouraged names like Traian, after the emperor who conquered Dacia, Aurel, Octavian and Ovidiu, after the poet exiled to the Black Sea coast.
Can I use these names for fiction or test data?
Yes. They are combinations of ordinary names and cannot be owned. Popescu and Ionescu are carried by hundreds of thousands, so a common combination will coincide with real people; a name that will be attached to something public deserves a quick search.
