How the Wrestler Name Generator works
This wrestler name generator makes professional wrestling ring names by gimmick: clean-cut babyfaces with a nickname in quotes, arrogant heels with a trust fund and a suffix, one-word monsters, masked luchadores in Spanish, credentialed technicians, and hardcore brawlers named after things that hurt. Pick a gimmick and how many, then hit generate.
How the wrestler name generator works
A wrestling name is the shortest possible summary of a character. The crowd should know whether to cheer or boo before the entrance music finishes, and every style of ring name has grown up to do that job in a specific way.
Babyface names are honest, punchy and slightly heroic: a normal first name and a surname that sounds like a virtue or a force of nature (Ricky Steele, Johnny Storm), often with a nickname in quotes that promoters put on the poster. The nickname usually describes fighting spirit or a home town connection, because faces are supposed to be one of us, only braver.
Heel names go the other way. The first name is longer and posher, the surname sounds like old money or something venomous, and there is frequently a title ("The Franchise", "Mr. Perfect") or a suffix (III, Esq.) that tells the crowd this person thinks they are better than you. The generator pairs these deliberately so the arrogance reads without a promo.
Monster names are single words or short compounds with no first name: Kane, Abyss, Vader, Bane. Monsters do not have families. Adding "The" turns a noun into a monster (The Destroyer), and a "Big" plus a nickname gives a friendlier giant.
Luchador names are in Spanish, and follow lucha libre conventions: a mystical or animal noun (Místico, Tigre, Rayo), often with El or Super in front, a colour or place after (Negro, de Oro, del Norte), a generational marker (Jr., Hijo del) or a number. Female names take La and a feminine noun. The mask is implied by the name.
Technician names are the most ordinary-sounding, on purpose. A real first name and a plausible surname, with a nickname that advertises credentials ("The Submission Machine", "Olympic Gold Medallist") because the gimmick is that there is no gimmick, only skill.
Hardcore names reference violence and the objects used to commit it: barbed wire, thumbtacks, chairs, glass. A first name that is itself an adjective (Mad Man, Sick) or a plant (Cactus) works, as does a bare word like Havoc. Nicknames are long and describe injuries.
Every pattern is assembled at random from the lists, so results may coincide with real wrestlers past and present; the lists also include a few real names that define each style. Search before you use one.
FAQ
Can I use a ring name that a real wrestler has used?
Not if they are still active or if a promotion owns the name; WWE in particular trademarks the names it creates. Retired independent wrestlers are a grey area, but reusing a name invites confusion and bad feeling. Search Cagematch and the trademark register before committing.
Do wrestlers own their own ring names?
Only if they trademarked the name themselves or negotiated ownership in their contract. Many major promotions create and register the names of their talent, which is why performers often change names when they change companies. Independent wrestlers who file their own trademark keep the name.
How are luchador names chosen?
Traditionally by the wrestler's trainer or family. Many luchadores inherit names (Hijo del Santo, Blue Demon Jr.) because a name and mask are a family asset that can be passed down. New names usually combine a noun with a colour, a place or a mystical adjective.
Should a heel have a different kind of name from a face?
Yes. Faces get short, honest names; heels get longer, pretentious or sinister ones. The same wrestler often changes name or adds a title when they turn. If your character might switch alignment later, choose a neutral surname and let the nickname carry the heat.
What makes a good wrestling nickname?
It should describe what the wrestler does or where they are from, in five words or fewer, and it should sound good shouted by a ring announcer. Nicknames that are jokes wear out fast; nicknames that make a promise ("The Submission Machine") last as long as the wrestler keeps it.
