How the Cubic Metres To Cubic Feet works
This cubic metres to cubic feet converter uses the exact factor. Type a volume in cubic metres and get cubic feet as you type. A foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so a cubic foot is 0.028316846592 m³ and a cubic metre is 35.3147 cubic feet. The table covers removals, skips, shipping containers and concrete pours. Litres and gallons have their own pages. Press the swap button to go the other way.
Cubic metres to cubic feet: the factor is the foot, cubed
Since 1959 a foot has been exactly 0.3048 metres. Cube that and a cubic foot is 0.028316846592 m³, so one cubic metre is 1 ÷ 0.028316846592 = 35.31466672 ft³. The factor is much larger than the 3.28 feet in a metre because volume scales with the cube: 3.28084³ = 35.31. Forgetting to cube is the standard mistake, and it is out by a factor of ten.
Worked example: a 20-foot shipping container
A 20 ft container has an internal volume of about 33 m³, which is 1,165 ft³ — shipping lines quote 1,170 ft³. A 40 ft container is 67 m³, or 2,366 ft³, and a 40 ft high-cube is 76 m³, 2,684 ft³. Removal firms quote loads in cubic feet in Britain and America and in cubic metres almost everywhere else; a three-bedroom house is roughly 30 to 40 m³, or 1,000 to 1,400 ft³.
Worked example: a 2.5 m³ concrete pour
2.5 × 35.3147 = 88.3 ft³. American concrete is sold by the cubic yard, which is 27 ft³ or 0.7646 m³, so 2.5 m³ is 3.27 cubic yards. A ready-mix truck carries 6 to 8 m³, or 212 to 283 ft³. For slabs, a 10 cm slab over 25 m² is 2.5 m³; the same slab in feet is 4 inches over 269 ft², which is 89.7 ft³ before rounding.
Room and tank volumes
A room 4 m × 5 m with a 2.4 m ceiling is 48 m³, or 1,695 ft³, the figure a heating or air-conditioning calculation in BTU wants. A cubic metre of water is 1,000 litres and weighs a tonne; a cubic foot of water is 28.3 litres, 7.48 US gallons, and weighs 62.4 lb.
Skips and bulk materials
British skips are still sized in cubic yards — a 6-yard skip is 4.6 m³ — while aggregates and topsoil are sold by the cubic metre or the tonne. A bulk bag of about 0.7 m³ is 24.7 ft³. Firewood in the United States is sold by the cord, 128 ft³, which is 3.62 m³.
Litres
Because a litre is a cubic decimetre, 1 m³ is exactly 1,000 L and a cubic foot is 28.3168 L. The litres-to-gallons page handles the smaller volumes; this page is for anything sized in whole cubic metres.
Worked example: an 18 cubic foot fridge
American fridges and freezers are sized in cubic feet; European ones in litres. 18 × 0.028317 = 0.51 m³, which is 510 litres — a large fridge-freezer. A 7 ft³ chest freezer is 198 L; a 25 ft³ side-by-side is 708 L. Because a litre is a thousandth of a cubic metre, multiply cubic feet by 28.317 to go straight to litres.
Worked example: a 1,000 cubic foot removal load
1,000 × 0.028317 = 28.3 m³. British and American removal firms quote loads in cubic feet — a two-bedroom flat is about 700 ft³, a four-bedroom house 1,500 to 2,000 ft³ — while international movers and container lines work in cubic metres. A 20 ft container holds about 1,170 ft³, which is 33 m³, so the 2,000 ft³ house needs a 40 ft container at 67 m³.
Cubic metre to cubic feet formula and table
The formula on this page is ft³ = m³ ÷ 0.028316846592, applied exactly before rounding for display.

FAQ
How many cubic feet are in a cubic metre?
35.3147 cubic feet. A foot is 0.3048 m, so a cubic foot is 0.3048³ = 0.0283168 m³, and a cubic metre holds 1 ÷ 0.0283168 of them.
How many cubic feet in a 20 ft container?
About 1,170 ft³ internally, which is 33.2 m³. A 40 ft standard container is about 2,390 ft³ or 67.7 m³, and a 40 ft high-cube about 2,690 ft³ or 76.3 m³.
How do I convert cubic metres to cubic yards?
Multiply by 1.30795. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, or 0.764555 m³, so 10 m³ is 13.08 cubic yards. Concrete and skips in Britain and America are priced by the cubic yard.
Why is the factor 35 and not 3.28?
Because volume has three dimensions. A cubic metre is 3.28 ft long, 3.28 ft wide and 3.28 ft high, and 3.28 × 3.28 × 3.28 = 35.3. Area uses the square, 10.76, and length the plain factor.
How many cubic metres are in a cubic foot?
0.0283168 cubic metres, exactly 0.028316846592. It takes 35.3147 cubic feet to make a cubic metre. A cubic foot is also 28.3168 litres, or 7.48 US gallons.
