How the Km To Miles works

This km to miles converter uses the exact international mile. Type a distance in kilometres and get miles as you type. A kilometre is 0.621371 miles, the reciprocal of the exact 1.609344 km mile. The reference table covers race distances, speed limits and the round-number road distances that come up when driving abroad. Press the swap button to go the other way.

Km to miles: the factor and where it comes from

A mile is exactly 1,609.344 metres, so a kilometre is 1,000 ÷ 1,609.344 = 0.62137119 miles. Unlike the miles-to-km direction, the decimal does not terminate, and this page shows it to ten significant figures. For estimates, five-eighths — 0.625 — is within 0.6% and much easier to use.

Worked example: a 10K race

10 × 0.621371 = 6.21 miles. A 5K is 3.11 miles, a half marathon of 21.0975 km is 13.11 miles and a full marathon of 42.195 km is 26.22 miles. If your watch records in kilometres and the race is described in miles, the extra 0.11 mile on a 10K is about 175 m — a noticeable gap if you stop when the watch says six miles.

Worked example: a 100 km/h speed limit

Speed converts with the same factor, so 100 km/h is 62.1 mph, 120 km/h is 74.6 mph and 130 km/h is 80.8 mph. A 50 km/h urban limit is 31.1 mph. Hire cars in metric countries have speedometers in km/h with small mph figures inside; the conversion here is what those inner figures are showing.

Fuel economy is not a plain conversion

Litres per 100 km cannot be converted to mpg with this factor alone, because the gallon also differs and the ratio is inverted. As a guide, 6 L/100 km is 47 mpg imperial or 39 mpg US; 8 L/100 km is 35 mpg imperial or 29 mpg US. Use a dedicated fuel economy tool for anything precise — this page is for distance.

Estimating five-eighths

Divide by eight and multiply by five: 80 km is 10 × 5 = 50 miles (exact: 49.7). 200 km is 25 × 5 = 125 miles (exact: 124.3). Or halve the kilometres and add a quarter of that: 80 km is 40 + 10 = 50. Both give the same estimate; use whichever is easier with the number in front of you.

Distances that are round in one system only

Road signs in metric countries use round kilometre figures that become awkward in miles: 300 km is 186 miles, 500 km is 311 miles. The reverse is also true, which is why the Paris–Brest–Paris cycle ride is 1,200 km and the Land's End to John o'Groats route is about 874 miles, and neither converts into anything tidy.

Worked example: a marathon

The marathon distance is defined in metric as 42.195 km, but is usually described as 26.2 miles. 26.2 × 1.609344 = 42.165 km, which is 30 metres short of the real course — the true figure is 26.219 miles. A half marathon of 13.1 miles is 21.08 km against the defined 21.0975 km. If a training plan gives distances in miles, the small error does not matter; if you are measuring a course, use the metric definition.

Worked example: a 300-mile drive

300 × 1.609344 = 482.8 km. At a French motorway limit of 130 km/h that is about 3 hours 43 minutes of driving; at the UK's 70 mph, which is 112.65 km/h, the same distance takes 4 hours 17 minutes. Fuel economy converts the other way round: a car doing 40 mpg (imperial) uses 7.06 litres per 100 km, and the miles-to-km factor is only part of that sum, because the gallon changes too.

Kilometre to miles formula and table

The formula on this page is miles = km ÷ 1.609344, applied exactly before rounding for display.

How many miles in 1 kilometre? 1 km is 0.6214 mi. Likewise 5 km is 3.1069 mi, 10 km is 6.2137 mi, 42.2 km is 26.22 mi.

FAQ

How many miles are in a kilometre?

One kilometre is 0.621371 miles, which is exactly 1,000 ÷ 1,609.344. A kilometre is a little under two-thirds of a mile, or about five-eighths for mental arithmetic.

How do I convert km to miles quickly?

Multiply by five and divide by eight, or take sixty percent and add a bit. For 40 km, five-eighths is 25 miles and the exact answer is 24.85 miles. The five-eighths estimate is half a percent high.

How far is a 5K in miles?

A 5K is 3.107 miles, which runners round to 3.1. A 10K is 6.214 miles, a half marathon is 13.109 miles and a marathon is 26.219 miles, from the metric definitions of 21.0975 km and 42.195 km.

Is 100 km/h the same as 60 mph?

Not quite. 100 km/h is 62.14 mph, so a car doing 100 km/h is slightly faster than one doing 60 mph. The two are close enough that many drivers treat them as equivalent, but the difference is about 3.5 km/h.

How many kilometres are in a mile?

Exactly 1.609344 kilometres. A mile is 5,280 feet and a foot is 0.3048 metres by definition, so the product is exact and every conversion on this page is exact too.
