How the Metres To Yards works

This metres to yards converter uses the exact international yard. Type a length in metres and get yards as you type. A metre is 1.0936 yards — a yard and about three and a third inches — from dividing by the exact 0.9144 m yard. The table covers athletics distances, golf and the round-number lengths that come up in gardens and building work. Press the swap button to go the other way.

Metres to yards: nearly one to one, but not quite

The 9.36% difference between a metre and a yard is small enough to ignore for a rough sense of scale and large enough to matter for anything measured. A 100 m sprint is 109.4 yards; a 400 m lap is 437.4 yards. Over a garden fence of 30 m the gap is nearly three yards of timber, which is either a wasted panel or one short.

Worked example: a 400 m track

400 ÷ 0.9144 = 437.45 yards. The old imperial quarter-mile was 440 yards, so a metric lap is 2.55 yards, or 2.34 m, shorter. When athletics converted in the 1970s, times for 440 yards were roughly 0.3 seconds slower than for 400 m at the same pace, and the two are still listed as different events in historical tables.

Worked example: a 135 m golf hole

135 ÷ 0.9144 = 147.6 yards. A golfer who knows they hit an 8-iron 150 yards will be a yard or two over the green on a 135 m hole if they read the metres as yards — the other way round, reading yards as metres, leaves them 13 m short. Continental European courses mark in metres and British and American ones in yards, so the conversion matters every time you play abroad.

Fabric widths and lengths

European fabric is sold by the metre, typically 140 or 150 cm wide; American fabric by the yard, typically 44 or 60 inches wide. A pattern asking for 2 yards of 60-inch fabric needs 1.83 m of 150 cm fabric, which most shops will cut as 1.9 m. Go the other way to compare prices: a price per metre divided by 1.0936 is the price per yard.

Area and volume

Square metres to square yards uses the factor squared, 1.196: a 20 m² room is 23.9 square yards. Cubic metres to cubic yards uses it cubed, 1.308: a cubic metre of topsoil is 1.31 cubic yards. Landscaping suppliers in the US price bulk material by the cubic yard, and a bulk bag of about 0.7 m³ is a little under a cubic yard.

The quick way

Add ten percent, then take a little off: 50 m is 55 less half a yard, 54.7 yards. Or add a yard for every eleven metres — 33 m is 33 + 3 = 36 yards, and the exact figure is 36.1. For a fence, a run of hose or a length of cable, "metres plus ten percent" is the number to remember.

Worked example: a 100-yard dash and a 100 m sprint

100 yards is 91.44 m, so a 100-yard time is over a shorter course than a 100 m time by 8.56 m. Before athletics went fully metric, American and British schools ran 100 yards and 220 yards (201.17 m) and 440 yards (402.34 m), which is why the 200 m and 400 m are the modern equivalents — close, but not equal, so old records were never simply converted.

Worked example: a 150-yard golf shot

150 yards is 137.2 m. Golf course markers in the UK and US are in yards; in most of Europe they are in metres. A golfer used to yards will find a 150 m marker plays like 164 yards, which is a club longer. Rangefinders switch units in the settings, and the difference between the two is large enough that leaving it on the wrong one will cost strokes.

FAQ

How many yards are in a metre?

One metre is 1.0936 yards, which is exactly 1 ÷ 0.9144. In feet and inches, a metre is 3 feet 3.37 inches, so about three and a third inches longer than a yard.

Is a metre longer than a yard?

Yes. A metre is 100 cm and a yard is 91.44 cm, so a metre is 8.56 cm longer. Ten metres is very nearly eleven yards, which is the easiest way to keep the ratio in mind.

How do I convert square metres to square yards?

Multiply by 1.196, which is 1.0936 squared. A 50 m² floor is 59.8 square yards. Carpet and turf priced by the square yard in the US convert this way; multiply again by 1.0936 for cubic yards from cubic metres, a factor of 1.308.

Why is 400 m not the same as 440 yards?

440 yards is exactly 402.336 m, so the imperial quarter-mile lap was 2.336 m longer than a metric 400 m lap. Times for the two events are close but not interchangeable, and record books list them separately.

How many metres are in a yard?

Exactly 0.9144 metres. The figure was fixed by international agreement in 1959 and the foot and inch are defined from it, as one-third and one-thirty-sixth of a yard respectively.
