How the M/s To Km/h works
This m/s to km/h converter shows why the factor is 3.6. Type a speed in metres per second and get kilometres per hour as you type. There are 3,600 seconds in an hour and 1,000 metres in a kilometre, so multiply by 3.6. The table runs from walking pace to the speed of sound, with the Beaufort gale and hurricane thresholds included. Press the swap button to go the other way.
M/s to km/h: why multiply by 3.6
An object moving at 1 m/s covers 3,600 m in an hour, which is 3.6 km. So m/s × 3.6 = km/h exactly, and km/h ÷ 3.6 = m/s. The factor is one of the few worth memorising, because physics works in metres per second and everything on a road sign or a weather forecast is in kilometres per hour.
Worked example: a 25 m/s wind
25 × 3.6 = 90 km/h. Weather models output metres per second; the forecast you read has been converted. Beaufort force 8, a gale, begins at 17.2 m/s, 62 km/h; force 10, a storm, at 24.5 m/s, 88 km/h; force 12, hurricane, at 32.7 m/s, 118 km/h. The wind that makes walking hard, about 14 m/s, is 50 km/h.
Worked example: a physics answer of 12.5 m/s
12.5 × 3.6 = 45 km/h. A car braking from 45 km/h is the kind of figure an exam question wants back in road units. The reverse trap is worse: a question that gives 60 km/h and asks for stopping distance needs 16.7 m/s in the formula, and using 60 gives an answer thirteen times too large.
Athletics
Usain Bolt's peak speed of 12.4 m/s is 44.7 km/h. His 100 m average of 10.44 m/s is 37.6 km/h. A marathon world record pace of 5.9 m/s is 21.1 km/h, or 2:50 per kilometre. A tennis serve at 60 m/s is 216 km/h; a football free kick at 30 m/s is 108 km/h.
Falling and flight
An object dropped from rest reaches 9.8 m/s after one second, 35 km/h. A skydiver's terminal velocity of 55 m/s is 198 km/h. An airliner at 250 m/s is 900 km/h, and the speed of sound at sea level, 343 m/s, is 1,235 km/h.
Rule of thumb
Multiply by 4 and take off 10%: 30 m/s is 120 − 12 = 108 km/h, which is exact. Or double it, double it again, and subtract a tenth.
Worked example: a 100 km/h car
100 ÷ 3.6 = 27.8 m/s. A braking-distance question that gives the speed in km/h and the deceleration in m/s² needs this step first: at 27.8 m/s and 7 m/s² the stopping distance is v² ÷ 2a = 55 m. Forgetting to convert gives 714 m, and the mistake is easy to spot because it is absurd.
Worked example: a sprinter at 37.6 km/h
37.6 ÷ 3.6 = 10.4 m/s. Usain Bolt's peak in the 2009 100 m final was 12.4 m/s, or 44.7 km/h; his average over the race was 10.44 m/s, 37.6 km/h. A 4-minute-mile pace is 6.7 m/s, 24.1 km/h. Walking at 5 km/h is 1.39 m/s.

FAQ
How do I convert m/s to km/h?
Multiply by 3.6. A metre per second is 3,600 metres per hour, which is 3.6 km/h. So 10 m/s is 36 km/h, and 20 m/s is 72 km/h.
What is 1 m/s in km/h?
3.6 km/h, roughly a slow walk. 1.4 m/s, a normal walking speed, is 5 km/h. 2.8 m/s, a jog, is 10 km/h, and 5 m/s is 18 km/h.
What is 30 m/s in km/h?
108 km/h. That is a typical motorway speed and also a storm-force wind on the Beaufort scale. 27.8 m/s is 100 km/h exactly, and 25 m/s is 90 km/h.
Is m/s bigger than km/h?
The unit is bigger, so the number is smaller: 1 m/s is 3.6 km/h. If a speed in m/s is larger than the same speed in km/h, the conversion has gone the wrong way.
How do I convert km/h to m/s?
Divide by 3.6. A kilometre is 1,000 metres and an hour is 3,600 seconds, so 1 km/h is 1,000 ÷ 3,600 = 0.2778 m/s. 90 km/h is 25 m/s.
