How the Tonnes To Pounds works

This tonnes to pounds converter also covers long and short tons. Type a mass in metric tonnes and get pounds as you type. A tonne is 1,000 kg, and with the pound fixed at 0.45359237 kg that is 2,204.62 pounds. The page also sets out the three different tons — metric, US short and British long — because the word "ton" on its own is ambiguous by up to ten percent. Press the swap button to go the other way.

Tonnes to pounds: three tons

The metric tonne, spelled with the extra letters and abbreviated t, is 1,000 kg or 2,204.62 lb. The US short ton is 2,000 lb, or 907.18 kg. The British long ton is 2,240 lb — twenty hundredweight of 112 lb — or 1,016.05 kg. This page converts the metric tonne. If a figure says "tons" and comes from an American source, it almost certainly means short tons, and 1 short ton is 0.907 tonnes; a British source before the 1970s means long tons, and 1 long ton is 1.016 tonnes.

Worked example: a 3.5 tonne van

Vans up to 3.5 t gross weight can be driven on a standard car licence in the UK and EU. 3.5 × 2,204.62 = 7,716 lb. American light-truck classes are set in pounds — Class 1 is up to 6,000 lb, Class 2 up to 10,000 lb — so a 3.5 t European van sits in Class 2, alongside a heavy-duty pickup.

Worked example: 20 tonnes of aggregate

A large tipper lorry carries about 20 t, which is 44,092 lb, or 22.05 US short tons. American quarries sell by the short ton, so a 20-ton American load is 40,000 lb and 18.14 tonnes — nearly two tonnes less than the same figure in metric. Getting this wrong on a bulk order is expensive in either direction.

Vehicle, cargo and shipping weights

Shipping containers are rated in kilograms and tonnes: a 20-foot container has a maximum gross of about 30.48 t, which is 67,200 lb, a figure chosen so it is exactly 30 long tons. Kerb weights of cars are in kilograms in Europe and pounds in America; a 1,500 kg car is 1.5 t and 3,307 lb. Aircraft maximum take-off weights are in kilograms or pounds depending on the manufacturer: a 78 t airliner is 172,000 lb.

Very large and very small

Because the factor is 2,204.62, the pounds figure runs into the millions quickly: 1,000 t is 2.2 million lb, and a 100,000 t ship displaces 220 million lb. At the other end, a tenth of a tonne is 100 kg or 220.5 lb, which is the useful figure for checking whether a piece of machinery listed in pounds can go on a 100 kg-rated trolley.

In your head

Two thousand two hundred pounds to the tonne, so double the tonnes, add ten percent and call the result thousands: 8 t is 16 + 1.6 = 17.6 thousand lb, against the exact 17,637. Or remember that a tonne is 2,000 lb plus 10%, which is also the difference between a tonne and a US short ton.

Worked example: a 6,000 lb pickup

An American heavy-duty pickup has a kerb weight of around 6,000 lb. 6,000 × 0.00045359237 = 2.72 t. In Europe that puts it in the same weight class as a small delivery van, and the towing and licence rules that go with it. A 10,000 lb gross rating is 4.54 t, above the 3.5 t threshold for a standard car licence in the UK and EU.

Worked example: a 40,000 lb container load

US road limits allow around 44,000 lb of cargo in a standard container, and shippers usually plan for 40,000 lb. That is 18.14 t. The same container is rated to about 28 t of payload under international rules, or 61,700 lb — the road limit, not the container, is the constraint in the US. Freight quotes in tonnes and bills of lading in pounds are the routine case for this conversion.

FAQ

How many pounds are in a tonne?

2,204.62 pounds. A tonne is 1,000 kilograms and a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, so 1,000 ÷ 0.45359237 gives the figure. A short ton is 2,000 lb and a long ton 2,240 lb, so the metric tonne sits between them.

Is a tonne the same as a ton?

No. A tonne is 1,000 kg. A US ton is 2,000 lb (907 kg) and a British long ton is 2,240 lb (1,016 kg). The tonne is 10.2% heavier than a short ton and 1.6% lighter than a long ton.

How do I convert tonnes to US short tons?

Multiply by 1.10231, since a short ton is 2,000 lb and a tonne is 2,204.62 lb. Ten tonnes is 11.02 short tons. For long tons, multiply by 0.98421 instead: ten tonnes is 9.84 long tons.

Why does the answer have a decimal for whole tonnes?

Because 1,000 ÷ 0.45359237 does not divide evenly. Two tonnes is 4,409.245 lb. Freight paperwork usually rounds to the whole pound, and for anything over a tonne the fraction of a pound is far smaller than the accuracy of the weighbridge.

How many pounds are in a metric tonne?

2,204.62 pounds. A tonne is 1,000 kilograms and a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, so 1,000 ÷ 0.45359237 gives 2,204.62262. A short ton is 2,000 lb and a long ton 2,240 lb.
