How the Aircraft / Plane Name Generator works
This aircraft name generator makes aircraft and plane names in the shapes real aircraft carry: Lucky Lady and Miss Behaviour as nose art, Spirit of Northgate and City of Westgate as a fleet name, Skyrider and Thunderhead from the sky and weather, Silver Arrow and Golden Eagle from a colour, and Old Reliable or the Whirlybird as a crew nickname. Pick the type of aircraft, choose a style and generate up to a hundred.
How the aircraft name generator works
Aircraft have been named since the first ones, and the names fall into five shapes that each belong to a kind of flying, which is why the Aircraft select matters: a bomber gets Lucky Lady and Old Reliable, an airliner gets City of Westgate and the Clipper, a light aircraft gets Sweet Peggy and the Puddle Jumper, a helicopter gets Sky Angel and the Whirlybird, an airship gets Empress of the Clouds and the Whale, and a fighter gets Silver Arrow and the Widowmaker. The nose-art form, Lucky Lady, Miss Behaviour, Northgate Rose, Sassy Belle, is the crew's shape, a name painted on the nose of a wartime bomber by men who would not say aloud that they were frightened, so it is a woman's name, a lucky word or a pun, and it is the most loved shape in aviation and the one a warbird museum still repaints. The Spirit-or-City-of form, Spirit of Northgate, City of Westgate, Pride of the Plains, is the airline's and the record-breaker's shape, a name given to a whole fleet one city at a time or to a single aircraft that carried a nation's hopes, and it reads as official and a little grand. The sky-or-weather form, Skyrider, Thunderhead, Storm Wanderer, Zephyr, Cloud Dancer, is the manufacturer's and the private pilot's shape, a name for the element the machine lives in, and it is the shape of every light aircraft with a name on the cowling. The colour-and-bird form, Silver Arrow, Golden Eagle, the Red Comet, Blue Falcon, is the racing and the display-team shape, a fast name for a fast aircraft, and it is the shape a fighter gets when the crew is feeling proud rather than superstitious. And the crew-nickname form, Old Reliable, the Rattler, the Whirlybird, the Whale, the Puddle Jumper, is the affectionate insult, a name for the aircraft's one habit, and it is the one the mechanics use.
The names, places, colours, birds and nicknames are ordinary and the shapes shared, so a result is a new combination rather than a real aircraft by design, though nose-art names were painted on thousands of aircraft and a plain one, Lucky Lady, will have existed; the places in the fleet-name style are invented, so Spirit of Northgate points at no real city. An aircraft name is also painted on a nose or a fin and read by a ground crew at a distance, so the shapes here are two or three words and the fleet names carry their of.

FAQ
What is nose art and why are the names so often women?
Nose art is the painted name and picture on the front of a wartime aircraft, mostly bombers, done by the crew or a base artist. The names are women's names, lucky words and puns because the crews were young, superstitious and far from home, and a bomber named for a sweetheart or a pin-up was a charm as much as a joke.
How are airliners named?
Fleet by fleet, usually with a formula, City of plus a city, Spirit of plus a region, or a run of birds, rivers or stars, so passengers see a family rather than a one-off. The Spirit or City of style copies the formula with invented places, so a fictional airline can name a whole fleet without naming a real city.
What do helicopters and airships get called?
Helicopters get crew nicknames for the noise and the shape, Whirlybird, Chopper, Eggbeater, Dragonfly, and rescue helicopters get Angel names. Airships were named grandly, as Empress or Queen of the clouds, and nicknamed rudely, the Whale, the Sausage, the Gasbag, and the generator gives both ends of that.
Should a fictional aircraft have a grand name or a nickname?
Both, in the way real ones do: an official name on the fuselage, Spirit of Northgate, and a crew name in the hangar, the Rattler. A story that uses only the grand name reads like a brochure and one that uses only the nickname loses the sense of a machine that belongs to a fleet.
Can I use these names for fiction or test data?
Yes. The names are combinations of common first names, lucky words, invented places, sky words, colours, birds and nicknames and belong to no one, though a plain nose-art name will have been painted on a real bomber once. For an aircraft in a story, a game or a demo fleet list, use them freely.
