How the Alien Name Generator works

This alien name generator is free and makes a new batch each time. Generate alien character names: names alone such as Kethrax, Elalune, Xa'tk and Ombravaan, names with a people such as Vor'ith of the Vel and Quel'ari of the Ixiri, names with a brood such as Zhalune of the Third Brood and Ixioq the Fourth-Hatched, and names with a title such as Skatok the Warleader and Nyroshuun, Star-Reader of the Ulmeth. Choose a sound, soft, harsh, clicking or long, and generate up to a hundred at once.

Alien name generator: where the names come from

An alien name has to sound like it came from a different mouth, and the generator builds it from syllable tables in four sounds so that a species can be given a consistent voice. The soft sound is open vowels and liquid consonants, the alien that is graceful or telepathic, Elalune, Shari, Ovene, Liala, Miraeth, Iseani, Umelia, Orina. The harsh sound is hard stops and guttural clusters, the alien that is warlike or armoured, Kethrax, Vorok, Zhalek, Gorvugh, Kraggar, Throash, Drakord, Skaruk, Braxazh. The clicking sound is x, q, tz and k with an apostrophe for the glottal stop, the insectoid or the hive, Xa'tk, Tze'ix, Ixi'oq, Qk'ka, Tk'tze, Ck'ek, Xi'xa. The long sound is three or four syllables with long vowels, the ancient or the elder race, Ombravaan, Nyrosithra, Vaaluune, Quelorath, Heskesh, Ulmearion, Othulan, Zureeth. Each name may take a third syllable of the same sound as a tail, and the four sounds do not mix within one name, so every name on a click belongs to one voice. The people is the alien's species or clan, coined in the same manner, the Vel, the Kaa'thur, the Ixiri, the Thromm, the Skavane, the Ulmeth, the Quellari, the Vaalkin, the Nyrosh, the Zhal'ek. The brood is how an egg-laying or hive species counts its kin, of the Third Brood, the Fourth-Hatched, Ninth of Kethrax, hatched under the red moon, hatched under the eclipse. The title is the alien's standing, and the titles are chosen to sound like a translation, Broodmother, Hive-Speaker, Star-Reader, Warleader, Envoy, Clutch-Keeper, Pathfinder, Voice, Shell-Bearer, Tide-Singer, Nest-Warden, Far-Walker, Silence.

Name alone gives the name. Name with people gives the species or clan. Name with brood gives the hatching. Name with title gives the standing. The Sound select fixes the syllable tables, or on Any picks one per name.

There is no gender option, since an alien species may have none, or three, and the sound carries what the name needs.

The lists are original. The syllables, peoples, broods and titles are coined for this page and the names of no published species, character or race appear in them; a match with a film, a series or a game would be chance, and a name intended for commercial use should be searched first.

For the species as a whole, the alien species page; for its world, the alien planet page; for its words, the alien language page; and for the human crewmate, the sci-fi character page.

    FAQ

    What are the four sounds?

Soft, open vowels and liquid consonants, Elalune, Miraeth; harsh, hard stops and gutturals, Kethrax, Gorvugh; clicking, x, q, tz and k with a glottal apostrophe, Xa'tk, Tze'ix; and long, three or four syllables with long vowels, Ombravaan, Quelorath. The Sound select fixes one, and Any picks one per name.

How do I give a whole species one voice?

Set the Sound to one of the four and generate as many names as the story needs. The four sounds never mix within one name, so every name on a click belongs to the same voice, and the alien species page names the species itself in the same sounds.

    What is a brood name?

How an egg-laying or hive species counts its kin, since such a species tracks the clutch rather than the parent, Zhalune of the Third Brood, Ixioq the Fourth-Hatched, Ninth of Kethrax, Ombravaan, hatched under the red moon. The Name with brood kind gives it.

    What titles does it use?

Ones chosen to sound like a translation from the alien tongue, Broodmother, Hive-Speaker, Star-Reader, Warleader, Elder, Envoy, Clutch-Keeper, Pathfinder, Voice, Shell-Bearer, Tide-Singer, Nest-Warden, Far-Walker, Silence, Skyfather. The Name with title kind gives them, alone or with the people.

Are any of these names from published works?

No. Every list is original. The syllables, peoples, broods and titles are coined for this page and the names of no published species, character or race appear in them, so a match with a film, a series or a game would be chance, and a name meant for commercial use should be searched first.
