How the Clan / Guild / Team Tag Generator works

This clan tag generator gives a fresh list with every click. Generate clan tags, guild names and team names together: [VXK] Void Kestrels and (OTR) Otter Legion with a three-letter tag and a full name, [LYNX] and «ASH» as a word tag, Order of the Iron Thorn and Ravens of the Deep for an MMO guild, Vexis Esports and Team Kordan for a roster. Tags are two to five characters, the length nearly every game allows in front of a name. Choose a style and generate up to a hundred.

Clan tag generator: how the names are built

A clan tag is the two-to-five-character label that a game shows in front of every member's name, [VXK] Otto, and the full name is the thing the tag abbreviates, Void Kestrels, that appears on the roster page, the Discord server and the tournament bracket. The two have to be built together, because a tag that does not point at the name is forgotten and a name that has no natural tag ends up with a bad one. The generator's bracketed style produces both, choosing consonant-heavy three-letter tags, VXK, KRN, ZRT, because those are what is left on servers where every pronounceable three-letter tag was taken in 2005, and pairing them with an adjective and a plural animal or a plural and a group word: Ashen Ravens, Otter Legion, Kraken Syndicate. The word-tag style takes a short word, VOID, LYNX, APEX, and uses it whole, which reads better but is rarer to find free. The guild style is the MMO register, where names are long and formal, Order of the Iron Thorn, The Silent Company, Ravens of the Deep, and the tag is derived afterwards; and the esports style is the coined-word-plus-Esports or plus-Gaming shape of an organisation, Vexis Esports, Nyzek Gaming, Team Kordan, since real rosters are one invented word and a category noun.

Character limits vary. Most shooters allow four or five characters in the tag; some MMOs allow a guild name of twenty-four characters or more with spaces; and tournament platforms want a name under twenty. Everything here fits those limits, the brackets and guillemets are decoration a game may or may not allow, and nothing here is an existing team, only a name in the style: the tags are letter combinations and the esports names are coined words with no organisation behind them. A clan tag is seen more often than the clan name, so the test of a good one is that it is typeable, stands out in a kill feed and does not accidentally spell something.

For the individual gamertags that sit behind the tag, the Gamertag, Xbox and PlayStation pages; for the server the clan runs, the Server name page; and for the Discord where the roster lives, the Discord page in this section.

    FAQ

How long can a clan tag be?

Two to five characters in most games: four in many shooters, five in some, and one or two more in games that treat the tag as a guild abbreviation. Everything here fits five, and the three-letter tags fit every game that has tags at all.

Should the tag match the team name?

Yes, or nobody connects them. The easiest way is initials, VXK for Void Kestrels, or the first letters of the one word that matters, LYNX. A tag that is arbitrary looks like a random string and is not remembered.

What makes a good guild name in an MMO?

A formal register, a group word and something to belong to: Order of the Iron Thorn, The Silent Company, Ravens of the Deep. MMO guild names are long-lived and seen on a roster, so they can be longer and more solemn than a shooter clan name.

Why are esports team names one made-up word?

Because a coined word, Vexis, Kordan, Nyzek, can be trademarked, fits on a jersey and reads the same in every language, and the category noun, Esports or Gaming, does the explaining. The generator follows the shape without copying any real organisation.

Can I use these names for fiction or test data?

Yes. The tags are letter combinations, the names are fresh combinations of common words and the esports names are coined, so none is owned. Before registering a real team, search the name on the tournament platform to avoid an established roster; for a fictional clan in a story, use them freely.
