How the Farm Name Generator works

This farm name generator gives a fresh list with every click. Generate farm names in the shapes farms use: Whitfield Farm and Lund & Sons with a surname, Long Meadow Farm and Crooked Gate Smallholding as a field pair, Oakridge Organics and Riverside Produce as a place, Three Oaks Homestead and Seven Elms Farm with a number and a tree, and Hollow Ash Ranch or Silver Brook Farm with a tree or water word. Pick a holding, choose a style and generate up to a hundred.

Farm name generator: how the names are built

A farm is named for its family or its ground, and its name goes on a gate, an egg box and a stall at the market, so it has to sound like a place that has been worked for a long time and like food a person would trust; the five shapes here are the ones farms, smallholdings, ranches, homesteads, market gardens and orchards use, and the Holding select swaps the last word so the same shapes work for a cattle ranch or a half-acre veg plot. The surname-and-farm form, Whitfield Farm, Marsh Family Farm, Lund & Sons, Osei's Homestead, is the oldest shape, a family and a holding word, and it says a farm that will be here next year; the surnames here are common and no real farm is meant. The field word pair, Long Meadow Farm, Crooked Gate Smallholding, Stony Brook Market Garden, High Barn Farm, is the shape of the farm named for its ground, a small adjective and a feature of the land, and it is the most English of the shapes and the most crowded, since every parish has a Long Meadow. The place-and-organics form, Oakridge Organics, Riverside Produce, Highfield Growers, Northgate Dairy, is the modern trading farm's shape, an invented place and a word for what is sold, and it wins the search a person makes for a veg box nearby. The number-and-tree form, Three Oaks Homestead, Seven Elms Farm, Twin Willows, is the homesteader's shape, a number and a tree that stands in the yard, and it suits a smallholding and a ranch equally. And the tree-or-water-and-ranch form, Hollow Ash Ranch, Silver Brook Farm, Black Willow, Cold Spring Ranch, is the ranch and homestead shape, a colour or a mood and a tree or a water, and it sounds like a place on a map.

The surnames, field words, places, numbers, trees and waters are ordinary and the compounds shared, so a result here is a new combination and not an existing farm by design, but farm names are on maps and gates everywhere, so search the map for the parish, since a farm with the same name in the same district will confuse the post and the vet, then the business register, the domain and the trademark register in the food class if the farm sells under its name; a farm shop, a veg box and a cheese need the name to be free as a food brand. A farm name also goes on a gate and an egg box, so it should be short, plain and easy to paint.

For the shop at the gate, the Shop name page; for the vineyard next door, the Vineyard and winery page; for the brewery in the barn, the Brewery name page; for the candle and soap business in the dairy, the Candle and soap business page; and for the food truck at the market, the Food truck page.

    FAQ

Should a farm be named after the family or the land?

Both are traditional. A family name says continuity and suits a farm that will pass down; a land name, Long Meadow or Three Oaks, says a place and suits a farm that sells to the public, since strangers remember a place more easily than a stranger's surname. Many farms use both, Whitfield's Long Meadow Farm.

Should I use organic or free range in the name?

Only if you are certified, since organic is a regulated word in most countries and free range has a legal meaning for eggs and poultry. A farm that is not certified should use Produce, Growers or Farm and say how it farms on the label instead.

How do I check a farm name is free?

Search the map for your parish and district first, since a namesake nearby confuses deliveries, then the business register, the domain and social handles, and the trademark register in the food class if the farm sells under its name. Nothing here checks availability, and field pairs and tree names are popular.

Is ranch, homestead or smallholding the right word?

They are regional. Ranch says a large grazing holding and is North American and Australian; Homestead says a family holding and is American and Australian; Smallholding and Croft are British and say a few acres; Market Garden says vegetables for sale. Pick the word your neighbours use.

Can I use these names for fiction or test data?

Yes. The names are combinations of common surnames, field words, invented places, numbers, trees and waters and belong to no one, though a field pair will have namesakes in every county, so search before you print. For a farm in a story, a game or a demo produce catalogue, use them freely.
