How the Distance Calculator works
This distance calculator finds the distance travelled from a speed and a time, or solves for the speed or the travel time instead. Enter any two in kilometres, miles, metres or nautical miles and km/h, mph, m/s or knots, and every answer comes back in all of them.
How the distance calculator works
Distance, speed and time are linked by one formula: distance = speed × time. Rearranged, speed = distance ÷ time and time = distance ÷ speed. The page converts everything to metres and seconds, solves, then converts back, so mixing units is safe.
First example. Driving at 60 mph for 2 h 30 min covers 60 × 2.5 = 150 miles, which is 241.4 km.
Second example. 100 km at 80 km/h takes 100 ÷ 80 = 1.25 hours, so 1:15:00.
How many km/h is a knot? Exactly 1.852 km/h, because a nautical mile is 1,852 m and a knot is one nautical mile per hour. That is about 1.151 mph.
The result is an average. Real journeys include stops, traffic and changes of speed, so a time worked out from a route's average speed is more reliable than one worked out from the speed limit.

FAQ
How do I calculate distance from speed and time?
Multiply them, with the units matched: 50 km/h for 3 hours is 150 km. If the time is in minutes, divide by 60 first, so 45 minutes at 50 km/h is 50 × 0.75 = 37.5 km.
How long will it take to travel 300 miles?
At 60 mph it takes 5 hours and at 50 mph it takes 6 hours. Enter the distance and your expected average speed with Time selected to get the exact figure, then add time for breaks.
How do I convert mph to km/h?
Multiply by 1.609344, so 70 mph is 112.7 km/h. To go the other way, divide by the same number or multiply by 0.6214, so 100 km/h is 62.1 mph.
What is a nautical mile?
1,852 metres, originally one minute of latitude. It is used at sea and in aviation because it lines up with chart coordinates. Speeds in nautical miles per hour are called knots.
Why is m/s used for speed?
Metres per second is the SI unit of speed, used in physics, wind speed and athletics. Multiply m/s by 3.6 to get km/h, so a 10 m/s sprinter is running at 36 km/h.
