Why the same date reads differently
01/10/2026 is the first of October in Britain and January the tenth in the United States. Writing the month as a word removes that ambiguity, which is why contracts, cheques and invitations spell dates out. ISO 8601 solves the same problem for data by always putting the year first.
Styles and conventions
British style puts the day first and often uses ordinals such as 1st. American style puts the month first and places a comma before the year. Formal invitations spell every number in words, and legal documents often add the year in words to prevent tampering.
