How the times are worked out
The calculators use the NOAA solar position equations, which are accurate to about a minute for ordinary latitudes. Sunrise and sunset are the moments the top of the sun touches a flat horizon, allowing for atmospheric refraction.
What changes the real view
Hills, buildings and sea level all shift what you see. A valley can lose the sun half an hour before the calculated sunset, while a mountain summit sees it a few minutes later. Treat the times as the astronomical answer and allow a margin on location, especially when planning landscape photography.
