How the Dog Exercise Calculator works
This dog exercise calculator suggests how many minutes of exercise your dog needs each day. It uses the well-known 5 minutes per month of age rule for growing puppies and daily ranges for adult dogs by energy level, cut back for older dogs.
How the dog exercise calculator works
Puppies have soft growth plates, so long forced walks can do more harm than good. The common guide is 5 minutes of structured exercise per month of age, up to twice a day, until the dog is fully grown at about 12 months, or 18 months for large and giant breeds. The formula is minutes per session = age in months × 5. Adult dogs then need 30 to 60 minutes a day for low-energy breeds, 60 to 90 for most dogs and 90 to 120 or more for working and herding breeds. Seniors get about 40% less.
First example. A 4-month-old puppy can have 20 minutes of lead walking or structured exercise per session, up to twice a day, so up to 40 minutes daily. Free play it can stop at will is extra.
Second example. A 3-year-old high-energy dog needs 90 to 120 minutes a day, split into 2 to 3 sessions of 45 to 60 minutes. A 9-year-old large moderate-energy dog needs about 36 to 54 minutes.
How many walks a day does a dog need? Most adult dogs do well on two, with play or training in between. Puppies and high-energy breeds benefit from shorter, more frequent sessions.
These are rules of thumb, not veterinary limits. Breed, health, weather and the dog's own behaviour matter more than the clock, and mental work such as sniffing and training counts too.

FAQ
What is the 5 minute rule for puppies?
Give 5 minutes of structured exercise, such as a lead walk, per month of age, up to twice a day. A 3-month-old puppy gets 15 minutes per walk. Free play in the garden is not counted.
How long should I walk my dog each day?
Most adult dogs need 60 to 90 minutes of activity a day, usually as two walks plus play. Toy breeds and flat-faced dogs need less, and working breeds such as collies and spaniels often need two hours.
Can a dog get too much exercise?
Yes. Puppies can damage growing joints, flat-faced breeds overheat quickly and older dogs tire fast. Limping, stiffness the next day, lagging behind or heavy panting are signs to cut back.
How much exercise does a senior dog need?
Usually less, but still daily. Shorter, gentler walks spread through the day suit most seniors, and large breeds reach their senior years earlier, at around 7, than small breeds at around 10.
Does mental exercise count?
Yes. Sniffing walks, puzzle feeders and short training sessions tire a dog out and reduce boredom, so they are a good way to top up physical exercise on wet days or for dogs on restricted activity.
