How the Dog Pregnancy Calculator works

This dog pregnancy calculator gives the expected whelping date from the mating date, with the normal window for birth, how many days she has to go and key dates for checks. Switch to cat to get a kittening date for a pregnant queen.

How the dog pregnancy calculator works

Dogs are pregnant for about 63 days counted from ovulation, and most litters arrive between day 58 and day 68 after mating. Sperm can live for several days, so a mating date is a slightly loose starting point, which is why the window matters. Cats are pregnant for about 65 days, usually 61 to 72. The formula is due date = mating date + 63 days for a dog or + 65 days for a cat.

First example. A bitch mated on 1 September 2026 is due on 3 November 2026, with a normal window from 29 October to 8 November. An ultrasound can confirm the pregnancy from 26 September (day 25) and an X-ray to count puppies from 16 October (day 45).

Second example. A cat mated on 1 September 2026 is due on 5 November 2026, with kittens likely between 1 and 12 November. Have the nesting box ready by 29 October.

How many weeks is a dog pregnant? About 9 weeks. If two matings happened a few days apart, count from the first and treat the window as a little wider.

Your vet can narrow the date with progesterone tests at mating time or a pre-whelping X-ray. A drop in rectal temperature to below about 37.8 °C (100 °F) usually means whelping within 24 hours.

Due dates by mating date: dogs at 63 days (58 to 68) and cats at 65 days

FAQ

How long is a dog pregnant?

About 63 days, or 9 weeks, from ovulation. Counted from the mating date it can be anywhere from 58 to 68 days, because sperm survives in the bitch for several days before the eggs are ready.

How long is a cat pregnant?

About 63 to 67 days, usually quoted as 65 days or 9 weeks. Kittens born from day 61 onwards are normally fine, but contact a vet if nothing has happened by day 70 to 72.

When can I confirm my dog is pregnant?

An ultrasound can show pregnancy from about 25 days after mating, and a vet can feel the puppies from about day 28 to 35. An X-ray from day 45 shows the skeletons, which is the best way to count puppies.

What are the signs that labour is near?

Nesting, restlessness, loss of appetite and a fall in rectal temperature below about 37.8 °C (100 °F) are the usual signs. Labour typically starts within 24 hours of that temperature drop.

When should I call the vet during whelping?

Call if she has strong contractions for 30 minutes with no puppy, more than 2 to 4 hours pass between puppies, there is green discharge with no puppy following, or she is past day 68 with no signs.
