How the Grams To Ounces works

This grams to ounces converter uses the avoirdupois ounce. Type a mass in grams and get avoirdupois ounces as you type. An ounce is a sixteenth of a pound, which makes it exactly 28.349523125 g, so a gram is 0.035274 oz. The table is built around recipe quantities and the weights that come up when posting parcels. Press the swap button to go the other way.

Grams to ounces: which ounce

This page converts the avoirdupois ounce, the one used for food, post and body weight: 28.3495 g, sixteen to the pound. The troy ounce used for precious metals is heavier at 31.1035 g, and the fluid ounce is a volume, not a mass — a fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 avoirdupois ounces. If a recipe says "8 oz" of flour it means weight; if it says "8 fl oz" of milk it means volume, and the two are not interchangeable.

Worked example: a 250 g block of butter

250 × 0.035274 = 8.82 oz. American recipes use sticks of butter, which are 4 oz or 113 g, so a 250 g block is a little over two sticks. British butter comes in 250 g blocks and old British recipes in 8 oz quantities (227 g); the 23 g difference rarely matters in baking but does in pastry.

Worked example: a 100 g letter

100 g is 3.53 oz. Postal services that price by weight in ounces — the USPS steps at 1, 2, 3 oz and so on — put a 100 g item in the 4 oz band. Going the other way, the Royal Mail's 100 g large-letter band is 3.5 oz, and a US "1 oz" first-class letter is 28.3 g, which is about five sheets of 80 gsm A4 in an envelope.

Converting recipes

For baking, treat 25 g as roughly an ounce (it is 0.88 oz) only if you convert every ingredient the same way, so the ratios hold. For anything that needs the real figures — jam setting points, bread hydration — use the exact conversion. 100 g is 3.5 oz, 200 g is 7 oz, 450 g is very nearly a pound (15.9 oz) and 500 g is 1 lb 1.6 oz. Half a kilo is not a pound; it is ten percent more.

Nutrition labels

European labels give figures per 100 g; American ones per serving in ounces or grams. A 100 g serving is 3.53 oz. A "1 oz" serving of cheese or nuts is 28 g — the number 28 on American packaging is this conversion rounded. A 30 g serving on a UK cereal box is 1.06 oz.

Quick estimates

Divide by 28 — or by 30 and add seven percent. 200 g ÷ 30 is 6.67, plus 0.47, gives 7.1 oz; the exact figure is 7.05. For anything under 100 g, "divide by 28" and round is as accurate as kitchen scales.

Worked example: 8 oz of flour

8 × 28.3495 = 226.8 g. Most people round to 225 g, and the 1.8 g difference is well under what kitchen scales resolve. A cup of American all-purpose flour is about 4.25 oz, which is 120 g, so an 8 oz weight of flour is not two cups — it is nearer 1⅞. The confusion between ounces by weight and cups by volume is the single biggest cause of recipe conversion failures.

Worked example: a 6 oz steak

6 × 28.3495 = 170.1 g. Restaurant menus in the US list steaks by ounce — 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 — and in metric countries by the 50 g step — 150, 200, 250, 300, 450. The 8 oz steak is 227 g, so a "250 g" steak is a shade bigger than an 8 oz one, and a 16 oz steak is 454 g, a pound.

FAQ

How many ounces are in 100 grams?

100 grams is 3.527 ounces, usually rounded to 3.5 oz. Going the other way, 3.5 oz is 99.2 g, so recipes that swap the two are within one percent of each other.

Is 28 g the same as an ounce?

An ounce is 28.3495 g, so 28 g is 1.2% light. Nutrition labels and portion guides round to 28 g for convenience; for anything weighed on a kitchen scale the difference is smaller than the scale can read.

What is the difference between an ounce and a fluid ounce?

An ounce is mass, a fluid ounce is volume. A US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml and an imperial one 28.41 ml. A fluid ounce of water weighs about an ounce, but for oil, honey or flour the two are quite different.

How do I convert grams to pounds and ounces?

Divide grams by 453.592 for pounds; take the fraction and multiply by 16 for ounces. 700 g is 1.543 lb, and 0.543 × 16 is 8.7 oz, so 1 lb 8.7 oz. The table above gives ounces directly for amounts up to a kilogram.

How many grams are in an ounce?

Exactly 28.349523125 grams. An ounce is one sixteenth of a pound and the pound is defined as 453.59237 grams, so the ounce is fixed to the same precision. Kitchen use rounds it to 28.35 or 28.
