How the ML To Fl Oz works

This ml to fl oz converter gives US and imperial fluid ounces. Type a volume in millilitres and get US fluid ounces as you type. A US fluid ounce is exactly 29.5735295625 mL, so a millilitre is 0.033814 fl oz and 30 mL is very nearly one ounce. The table covers spoon measures, bottles and cans. Imperial fluid ounces, used in older British recipes, are 28.41 mL and are covered below. Press the swap button to go the other way.

Ml to fl oz: the factor

A US gallon is 128 fluid ounces and exactly 3,785.411784 mL, so a fluid ounce is 29.5735295625 mL and a millilitre is 1 ÷ 29.5735 = 0.03381402 fl oz. For kitchen work, 30 mL to the ounce is within 1.5% and easy to use: divide millilitres by 30.

US and imperial fluid ounces

The imperial fluid ounce is 28.4130625 mL, 4% smaller than the US one, and there are 20 of them in an imperial pint against 16 US fl oz in a US pint. So 500 mL is 16.9 US fl oz but 17.6 imperial fl oz. Modern British recipes are metric; older ones and Australian ones written in ounces mean imperial. American nutrition labels use a rounded "US food labelling" ounce of exactly 30 mL, which is why a 355 mL can says 12 fl oz rather than 12.005.

Worked example: a 750 mL wine bottle

750 × 0.033814 = 25.36 fl oz. That is why the standard bottle is described as "25.4 oz" on American shelves, and why a 5 oz pour gives five glasses. A 330 mL can is 11.16 fl oz; the American 12 oz can is 355 mL. A 500 mL bottle of water is 16.9 fl oz, the "16.9 oz" printed on the label.

Worked example: a recipe calling for 120 mL of milk

120 × 0.033814 = 4.06 fl oz, which an American recipe would write as ½ cup. A US cup is 8 fl oz, 236.6 mL, though recipe writers use 240 mL. A tablespoon is 14.79 mL, usually rounded to 15, and a teaspoon 4.93 mL, rounded to 5. So 15 mL is 0.51 fl oz and the 5 mL teaspoon is a sixth of an ounce.

Fluid ounces are not ounces

A fluid ounce measures volume; an ounce measures weight. They match for water — 1 fl oz of water weighs 1.04 oz — but not for anything else. 100 mL of honey is 3.38 fl oz and weighs 5 oz; 100 mL of flour is 3.38 fl oz and weighs about 2 oz. Convert a weight in grams to ounces on the grams-to-ounces page, not here.

Worked example: the 3.4 oz airline limit

3.4 × 29.5735 = 100.55 mL. The cabin-baggage liquid limit is 100 mL almost everywhere, and American packaging labels the same bottles 3.4 fl oz. A 3 oz bottle is 88.7 mL, safely inside the limit; a 4 oz bottle is 118 mL and will be confiscated.

Worked example: 8 fl oz in a recipe

8 × 29.5735 = 236.6 mL, one US cup. Recipe writers round the cup to 240 mL, so ½ cup is 120 mL and ¼ cup is 60 mL. A 12 oz can is 355 mL; a 16 oz pint glass is 473 mL; a 2-litre bottle is 67.6 fl oz. If a recipe gives ounces for a dry ingredient such as flour, it means weight — use the ounces-to-grams page.
