Hectares to acres: why the factor is 2.47

Most of the world measures land in hectares, including EU farm subsidy claims. The United States and many older British and Irish listings use acres. A figure in one unit means little to someone who thinks in the other until it is converted, and a rough guess that is a few percent out can be the difference between a plot that fits a building and one that does not. The factor is fixed by definition, so this page multiplies exactly rather than estimating.

The two definitions

A hectare is 10,000 m², a square 100 m on each side. The name comes from the metric unit are, which is 100 m², so a hectare is 100 ares. An acre is defined through the yard. The international yard is exactly 0.9144 m, and an acre is 4,840 square yards, which is exactly 4,046.8564224 m². Divide one by the other and a hectare is 2.471053815 acres, and an acre is 0.4046856422 hectares.

Where the units are used

Most countries record land in hectares. Farm statistics and sale particulars in the United States are in acres. Crop yields follow the same split: tonnes per hectare in most countries, bushels per acre in the US. For wheat, a yield of 1 tonne per hectare is about 14.87 bushels per acre, using the 60 lb bushel. A rate per hectare becomes a rate per acre by multiplying by 0.4047, so 100 kg/ha is 40.5 kg/acre.

Sports grounds give a feel for the size. A football pitch of 105 × 68 m is 0.714 ha, or 1.76 acres. FIFA allows pitches from 100 to 110 m long and 64 to 75 m wide, so the range runs from about 0.64 to 0.83 ha. Central Park in New York is about 341 ha, or 843 acres, and Hyde Park in London is about 142 ha. A square kilometre is 100 ha, or 247.1 acres. A square mile is 640 acres, which is about 259 ha.

Worked examples

Example one: a 40 ha farm is 40 × 2.471053815 = 98.8421526 acres, a 100-acre farm in old units. A 5-acre smallholding is 5 × 0.4046856422 = 2.0234 ha, which is what sale particulars will usually quote as "about 2.02 ha". A 1,000-acre estate is 404.7 ha, a little over four square kilometres.

Example two, small plots in reverse: a quarter-acre block is 0.25 × 0.4046856422 = 0.1012 ha, or about 1,012 m². A metric building plot of 1,000 m² is 0.1 ha, which is 0.247 acres. A half-acre is 0.2023 ha.

Tips and pitfalls

• Do not use 2.5 or 0.4 as a shortcut for a document. Two and a half acres to the hectare is about 1.2% high, and 0.4 ha to the acre is about 1.2% low. On 100 acres that is nearly half a hectare.
• Historic acres differ. Older Scottish and Irish land measures were larger than the statute acre, so a deed from those areas may not match a modern conversion. Check the source.
• Gross and net area. A listing may include roads, verges or easements. Ask which area is quoted before comparing two plots.
• Symbols. Write "ha" and "ac" in lower case.
