How the Kg To Stone works

This converts kg to stone, and stone back to kg. Type a mass in kilograms and get stone as you type. A stone is exactly 6.35029318 kg, so a kilogram is 0.157473 stone. The result is decimal stone; the explainer shows how to split it into stone and pounds, which is how the figure is used, and the table covers adult body weights in 5 kg steps. Press the swap button to go the other way.

The formula. Stone = kg ÷ 6.35029318, or kg × 0.157473; kg = stone × 6.35029318. To find how many pounds are left over, multiply the decimal part of the stone figure by 14.

Decimal stone to stone and pounds

The converter gives stone as a decimal. Keep the whole number, multiply the fraction by 14 and round to get pounds. 75 kg is 11.81 stone; 0.81 × 14 = 11.3, so 11 st 11 lb. Do not read the decimal as pounds — 11.81 st is not 11 st 8 lb. When the pounds round to 14, carry one: 12.99 st is 12 st 13.9 lb, which rounds to 13 st 0 lb.

Worked example: an 80 kg body weight

80 × 0.157473 = 12.598 stone. 0.598 × 14 = 8.4 lb, so 12 st 8 lb. NHS letters and GP records in the UK give weight in kilograms and many patients want it in stone; this is the conversion the nurse does in their head, usually as "kilos times 2.2 for pounds, then divide by 14".

Worked example: a 5 kg target

5 × 0.157473 = 0.787 stone, which is 11.0 lb — five kilograms is very nearly eleven pounds. So a 5 kg weight-loss goal is 11 lb, a 10 kg goal is 1 st 8 lb and a 20 kg goal is 3 st 2 lb. The other way, a stone is 6.35 kg and half a stone is 3.18 kg.

BMI charts in stone

Older BMI wall charts have stone on one axis and feet on the other; newer ones use kilograms and metres. To use a stone chart from a kilogram figure, convert first. The BMI itself is always calculated in metric — kg ÷ m² — so if you have the metric figures, use them directly and skip the stone conversion altogether.

Luggage, parcels and livestock

Almost nothing except body weight is quoted in stone any more. Baggage is kilograms or pounds; parcels are kilograms or pounds; agricultural weights are kilograms. The one exception is horse racing, where the weight a horse carries is in stone and pounds: a 60 kg allocation would be 9 st 6 lb.

Rough figures

Divide by six and take off a bit: 90 kg ÷ 6 = 15, less about a third of a stone, so 14.2 st against the exact 14.17. Or double the kilos, add ten percent for pounds, then divide by 14 — the long way round, but it gives the pounds directly and is what most people actually do.

Worked example: 12 st 7 lb

7 lb is exactly half a stone, so this is 12.5 st. 12.5 × 6.35029318 = 79.38 kg. Bathroom scales showing kg read to a tenth, so 79.4 kg. Going the other way, a target of 75 kg is 11 st 11.4 lb — see the kilograms-to-stone page for that split.

Worked example: a 2 stone weight loss

2 × 6.35029318 = 12.70 kg. Weight-loss targets are often set in stone in the UK and in kilograms by clinicians, and the two do not line up: "lose a stone" is 6.35 kg, and "lose 5 kg" is 11 lb, a little over three-quarters of a stone. Half a stone is 3.18 kg; a quarter stone (3.5 lb) is 1.59 kg.
