Pounds to stone: one exact ratio

A stone is exactly 14 avoirdupois pounds. The pound itself has been exactly 0.45359237 kg since 1959, which makes a stone 6.35029318 kg. Because both units are imperial, the ratio of 14 is exact and involves no rounding.

The formula

stone = pounds ÷ 14, and pounds = stone × 14. For stone and pounds, the whole stone is the quotient and the remainder is the pounds: 160 ÷ 14 = 11 remainder 6, so 160 lb is 11 st 6 lb.

Decimal stone is not stone and pounds. 11.43 stone is 11 stone 6 pounds, not 11 stone 4 pounds. To get the pounds, multiply the decimal part by 14.

Tips and pitfalls

• Do not read the decimal as pounds. This is the most common slip. 12.5 stone is 12 st 7 lb.
• Weigh at the same time of day. Body weight swings by 1 to 2 kg, roughly 2 to 4 pounds, across a day with food, water and salt. Track weekly averages rather than single readings.
