How the Metres To Feet works

This metres to feet converter gives decimal feet and feet-and-inches. Type a length in metres and get feet as you type. One metre is 3.2808 feet, from dividing by the exact 0.3048 m foot. The result is decimal feet; the explainer shows how to turn the fraction into inches, which is what a height or a room measurement usually needs. Press the swap button to go the other way.

Metres to feet: decimal feet to feet and inches

The converter gives feet as a decimal. To express the fraction in inches, multiply the part after the decimal point by 12. 1.75 m is 5.741 feet; 0.741 × 12 = 8.9 inches, so 5'9". Do the multiplication before rounding: 5.74 feet is not 5 feet 7 inches, a mistake that is easy to make when the decimal happens to look like a number of inches.

Worked example: a 1.65 m height

1.65 ÷ 0.3048 = 5.4134 feet. The decimal part 0.4134 × 12 = 4.96 inches, so 5'5". A height of 1.70 m is 5.577 feet, 0.577 × 12 = 6.9 inches, so 5'7". Because a centimetre is less than half an inch, heights one centimetre apart can round to the same feet-and-inches figure, and heights two centimetres apart can round to figures an inch apart.

Worked example: a 25 m swimming pool

25 ÷ 0.3048 = 82.02 feet. American short-course pools are 25 yards, which is 75 feet or 22.86 m, so a metric 25 m pool is 9.3% longer per length — which is why times in yards pools and metres pools are never directly comparable and swimming keeps separate records for each.

Heights of buildings and mountains

Mountains are the classic case for this conversion. Mont Blanc at 4,808 m is 15,774 feet; Ben Nevis at 1,345 m is 4,413 feet; Everest at 8,849 m is 29,032 feet. Aviation goes the other way — altitude is quoted in feet even in metric countries — so a 3,000 m cloud base is about 9,840 feet, which pilots would call flight level 100 once corrected to standard pressure.

Room and furniture sizes

Furniture listed in metres or centimetres from European retailers needs converting to check against rooms measured in feet. A 2 m sofa is 6.56 feet, or 6'7". A 1.2 m desk is 3.94 feet, just under four. A 2.4 m ceiling — the metric standard — is 7.87 feet, a hair under the 8-foot imperial standard, which is why old plasterboard sheets and new ones do not quite line up.

Estimating in your head

A metre is about three and a quarter feet. Triple the metres and add a quarter of the metres again: 20 m is 60 plus 5, so 65 feet, against the exact 65.6. For rough purposes three feet to the metre — a metre is a long yard — is usually good enough.

Worked example: a 6-foot person

6 × 0.3048 = 1.8288 m, which is 1.83 m to the nearest centimetre. Add two inches for 6'2": 74 inches is 6.1667 feet, times 0.3048 is 1.8796 m, or 1.88 m. The difference between 6'0" and 6'2" is about 5 cm, which matches the 2.54 cm per inch you would expect.

Worked example: a 30-foot boat

30 × 0.3048 = 9.144 m. Marina berths in Europe are priced by length overall in metres, usually in whole-metre or half-metre bands, so a 30-foot boat sits in the 9–10 m band. The same boat's 10-foot beam is 3.048 m.

FAQ

How many feet are in a metre?

One metre is 3.2808 feet, or exactly 1 ÷ 0.3048. Since the foot is defined as 0.3048 m, the metre-to-feet factor is the reciprocal and does not terminate as a decimal.

How do I convert metres to feet and inches?

Divide the metres by 0.3048 to get decimal feet. Keep the whole number as feet, and multiply the fraction by 12 for inches. 1.8 m is 5.906 feet; 0.906 × 12 is 10.9 inches, so 5'11".

Is a metre longer than a yard?

Yes, by about 9.4 cm. A yard is exactly 0.9144 m, so a metre is 1.0936 yards, or 3 feet 3.37 inches. Treating a metre as a yard undercounts by nearly ten percent, which adds up over a room or a running track.

Why do I get 3.2808 rather than 3.28?

The page shows the factor to ten significant figures so that large lengths convert accurately. Using 3.28 for a 1,000 m distance gives 3,280 feet instead of 3,280.84, a difference of nearly a foot; for anything over a few metres the extra digits matter.

How many metres are in a foot?

Exactly 0.3048 metres. The international foot was defined in 1959 as 12 international inches of 25.4 mm each, which makes it 304.8 mm, and that definition has not changed since.
