How the Minecraft XP Calculator works

Enter your current level and the level you want, and the Minecraft XP calculator shows how many experience points the climb takes. It also gives the total XP stored at the target level, the points for the next level, a rough Bottle o' Enchanting count and what you would drop on death.

Minecraft levels are not equal steps. Each level costs more points than the last, and the cost jumps sharply after level 15 and again after level 30. Going from 0 to 30 takes 1,395 points, but the three levels from 27 to 30 alone take 306. Knowing the real number helps you decide whether to farm, trade or simply enchant at a lower level.

How the Minecraft XP calculator works

The game stores your experience as a running total of points. The calculator converts both levels to totals with the formulas used by Java and Bedrock editions since 1.8, then subtracts.

Level range Total XP at level L Points to the next level
0–16 L² + 6L 2L + 7 (up to level 15)
17–31 2.5L² − 40.5L + 360 5L − 38 (levels 16–30)
32 and above 4.5L² − 162.5L + 2,220 9L − 158 (level 31 up)

If the target is lower than the current level, the result is the number of points you would spend, which is what an enchantment or anvil repair takes from you.

Worked examples

Example 1: from level 0 to 30. The formula for level 30 is 2.5 × 30² − 40.5 × 30 + 360 = 1,395 points, and level 0 is 0, so the climb takes 1,395 points, about 200 Bottles o' Enchanting.

Example 2: from level 20 to 40. Level 40 holds 4.5 × 40² − 162.5 × 40 + 2,220 = 2,920 points and level 20 holds 550, so you need 2,370 points, or about 339 bottles.

Enchanting only takes three levels

An enchanting table needs you to be at level 30 to see the top offers, but it only removes one to three levels. So the cheapest way to enchant repeatedly is to stay near 30: dropping from 30 to 27 costs 306 points, while building from 0 to 30 costs 1,395. Never spend high levels on anvil work while an enchanting table is waiting.

Bottles and death drops

A Bottle o' Enchanting releases 3 to 11 points, 7 on average, so the bottle count is the points needed divided by 7 and rounded up. Expect some variation either way. When you die, you drop 7 points per level you had, capped at 100 points. Everything above that is lost, which is why dying at level 30 leaves just 100 of your 1,395 points on the ground.

Fast ways to earn XP

Mob farms, especially enderman farms in the End and guardian farms at ocean monuments, give the quickest steady XP. Smelting and then collecting from a furnace pays out stored XP in one go, and trading with villagers gives a few points per trade. Mining quartz, lapis, redstone and diamond ore drops XP too, but Silk Touch removes it.

Tips and pitfalls

Levels above 30 are mostly for anvils. The enchanting table never asks for more than 30, but combining heavily enchanted gear on an anvil can cost 39 levels or more. Those levels are worth far more points than the low ones.

Mending eats XP orbs. Holding or wearing Mending gear diverts orbs to repairs before they reach your bar. Take it off when you are farming levels.

The level cap is huge. The game's limit is level 21,863 in Java Edition before the bar breaks. The calculator stops there.

How to read the result

The first line is the points needed, or spent if you went down. Total XP at the target is what the game stores for that level. XP for the next level is the size of the bar you will be filling. The table lists the total and next-level cost at key levels from 1 to 100.

FAQ

How much XP do you need to get to level 30 in Minecraft?

1,395 experience points from level 0. The first 15 levels take 315 points, levels 15 to 30 take the other 1,080, because each level after 15 costs 5 more points than the last.

How many Bottles o' Enchanting does it take to reach level 30?

About 200. Each bottle drops 3 to 11 points, averaging 7, so 1,395 points needs roughly 200 bottles. Expect anywhere from about 180 to 220 depending on the rolls.

Is the XP formula the same in Java and Bedrock?

Yes. Both editions have used the same level formulas since Java 1.8 and the matching Bedrock updates, so the numbers here apply to either. Older Java versions used a gentler curve.

How much XP do you keep when you die?

You drop 7 points per level, up to a maximum of 100 points, and the rest is lost. With the keepInventory game rule turned on you keep all your levels instead.
