How the Cups To Ml works
This cups to ml converter uses the US customary cup of 236.59 ml, the cup in almost every American recipe. Type a number of cups, including fractions such as 0.75, and the millilitres appear as you type. Metric cups of 250 ml, used in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, are covered in the explainer and table. Press the swap button to turn millilitres into cups.
The cup is a volume, not a weight, and it is not the same size everywhere. An American recipe, an Australian one and a 1970s British cookbook can all say "1 cup" and mean three different amounts. For most cooking the gap is small enough not to matter, but in baking a 6% difference in liquid can change a cake's texture, so it pays to know which cup a recipe means.
Cups to ml: which cup?
- US customary cup: half a US pint, 8 US fluid ounces, exactly 236.5882365 ml. This is the cup in American recipes and on US measuring cup sets, and the one this converter uses.
- US legal cup: 240 ml, used on US nutrition facts labels for serving sizes.
- Metric cup: 250 ml, used in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, and on most measuring jugs sold in the UK.
- UK imperial cup: 10 imperial fluid ounces, about 284 ml. It appears in older British recipes and is rarely used today.
The formula
ml = cups × 236.5882365, and cups = ml ÷ 236.5882365. For a metric cup, multiply by 250 instead. In practice, 1 US cup is 237 ml, and rounding to 240 ml is fine for anything but baking.
Worked examples
The first example is a US pancake recipe calling for 1½ cups of milk. 1.5 × 236.59 = 354.9 ml, so measure 355 ml. If you used a metric cup instead, you would pour 375 ml, 20 ml more.
The second example goes the other way. A 400 ml tin of coconut milk is 400 ÷ 236.59 = 1.69 US cups, so a recipe asking for 1¾ cups needs a splash more than one tin.
A third example: a third of a cup is 78.9 ml, which most people round to 80 ml.
How many ml in a cup, and in common fractions
There are 236.59 ml in a US cup and 250 ml in a metric cup. The table gives both for the fractions found on measuring cup sets, with US fluid ounces for reference.

How to read the result
- cup equals gives the volume in millilitres, to as many decimals as the factor carries. Round to the nearest 5 ml for a measuring jug.
- Conversion shows the factor, 1 cup = 236.5882365 ml. After a swap it reads 1 ml = 0.0042 cup.
- Inverse gives the factor for the opposite direction.
Tips and pitfalls
- Cups of flour are not millilitres of flour. A cup measures volume, and how much flour fits depends on how it is scooped. For dry ingredients, weigh them with the cups to grams converter.
- Check the recipe's origin. Australian and New Zealand recipes use 250 ml cups and 20 ml tablespoons. American recipes use 237 ml cups and 15 ml tablespoons.
- Read liquids at eye level. A measuring jug read from above can be off by 10 ml or more.
- Scale with one system. When halving or doubling, convert once and scale the millilitres with the recipe scaler rather than mixing cups and ml.

FAQ
How many ml is 1 cup?
A US cup is 236.59 ml, usually rounded to 237 ml or 240 ml. A metric cup, used in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, is exactly 250 ml. Older British recipes sometimes mean an imperial cup of about 284 ml.
How many cups is 250 ml?
250 ml is 1.06 US cups, a little over one cup. It is exactly one metric cup, so if the recipe is Australian or New Zealand, 250 ml is the cup it means.
How many ml is half a cup?
Half a US cup is 118.3 ml, usually rounded to 120 ml. Half a metric cup is 125 ml. The 7 ml difference rarely matters except in precise baking, where it is safer to weigh.
Is a US cup the same as a UK cup?
No. The US customary cup is 236.59 ml. The UK has no official cup today; British measuring jugs and modern recipes usually use the 250 ml metric cup, and older recipes used a 284 ml imperial cup.
Why does my nutrition label say 1 cup is 240 ml?
US food labelling rules define a cup as exactly 240 ml for serving sizes. It is 1.4% bigger than the customary cup, a difference too small to notice when pouring.
