How the Turf Calculator works

This turf calculator works out how much turf or sod to order for a new lawn. Enter the lawn area in square metres or square feet, a waste allowance for cutting around curves and edges, and the roll size, and it returns the number of rolls, the area with waste, the rough weight, and if you add them, the pallets and the total cost.

Turf is sold by the roll or slab. UK and European rolls are usually 1 m², US sod usually comes as 16 × 24 inch pieces or 2 × 5 ft rolls, and big rolls for machine laying cover 15 m² or more. Order it to arrive the day you lay it; turf left rolled up in warm weather yellows within a day or two.

How the turf calculator works

The formula is rolls = area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ roll area, rounded up. For example, a 50 m² lawn with 5% waste on 1 m² rolls needs 53 rolls, weighing about 945 kg; at 60 rolls a pallet that is one pallet, and at 4.00 a roll it costs 212.00. A second example: a 500 ft² lawn laid with 16 × 24 in sod pieces needs 197 pieces.

Allow 5% for a simple rectangle and 10% or more for curved beds and awkward shapes. To measure an irregular lawn, split it into rectangles, triangles and circles and use the garden area calculator. Fresh turf weighs roughly 15–20 kg per square metre, so check how many kilograms your vehicle or barrow can carry.

FAQ

How much turf do I need?

Measure the length and width of the lawn and multiply them to get the area, then add 5–10% for waste. A 6 × 8 m lawn is 48 m², so order about 51 rolls of 1 m² turf. For curved lawns, break the shape into simple parts and add them together.

How many square feet is a pallet of sod?

It varies by farm, but a pallet commonly carries 400 to 500 square feet, which is 150 to 190 of the 16 × 24 inch pieces. Enter your supplier's rolls per pallet in the calculator to see how many pallets to order.

How much does a roll of turf weigh?

A 1 m² roll of fresh turf weighs about 15 to 20 kg, more when it is wet. A pallet of 60 rolls can weigh close to a tonne, so check whether it can be delivered to the kerb and how far you will have to barrow it.
