How the Typing Speed Test works
This typing speed test gives you a fresh passage to copy for 30 seconds to 5 minutes and scores your net and gross words per minute, accuracy and uncorrected errors as soon as the time runs out. The clock starts on your first keystroke.
How the typing speed test works
Each test builds new text from simple sentences or common words, so you cannot learn a passage by heart. Letters you type correctly turn light, mistakes are marked in red, and you can backspace to fix them. Gross WPM is the characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Net WPM takes off one word for each mistake still in the text at the end. Accuracy is the share of characters that match. Pasting is blocked, and changing the length or text type starts a new test.
First example. In a 30-second test you type 160 characters and leave 2 mistakes. That is 32 words in half a minute, a gross 64 WPM. The 2 errors take off 4 WPM for a net 60 WPM, at 99% accuracy.
Second example. In a 1-minute test you type 300 characters with 9 mistakes left in. The gross speed is 60 WPM and the net speed is 51 WPM, at 97% accuracy.
Which length should I choose? One minute is the usual quick check. Job typing tests often run 3 or 5 minutes, which gives a steadier result because one slow patch matters less.

FAQ
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average for adults who type regularly. 60 WPM or more is fast, and many data entry jobs ask for 50 to 60 WPM with at least 95% accuracy.
Why is my net WPM lower than my gross WPM?
Net WPM takes off one word a minute for each mistake you left uncorrected. Fixing errors as you go keeps the two numbers close. Accuracy shows the same thing.
Do corrected mistakes count against me?
Not directly. A mistake you backspace over does not count as an error, but the time spent fixing it lowers your speed. Errors you leave in place do count.
Why can't I paste into the test?
Pasting the passage would give a false result, so the box only accepts typing. Type the passage yourself, exactly as shown, for a speed you can compare with other tests.
How do I type faster?
Learn touch typing with all ten fingers, keep your eyes on the text rather than the keys, and aim for accuracy first. Speed follows from steady daily practice of 10 to 15 minutes.
