How the Keyboard Shortcuts Cheat Sheet works
This keyboard shortcuts cheat sheet puts the forty combinations worth memorising side by side for Windows and Linux and for macOS: editing, moving through text, screenshots, switching windows and working with browser tabs. It is handy when you switch between a work PC and a Mac. Search for an action or a key, or print the page.
Reading the keyboard shortcuts cheat sheet
Each row is one action with the Windows and Linux keys and the Mac keys next to each other. The rule of thumb is that Ctrl on Windows becomes Cmd on a Mac, and Alt becomes Option, but the exceptions are exactly the shortcuts people get wrong: moving by line, deleting words, screenshots and force quit. The Where column says whether a shortcut is system-wide or only in browsers or editors.
Shortcuts that save the most time
Reopening a closed tab, pasting without formatting and jumping by word are the three most people wish they had learnt sooner. Selecting the address bar with Ctrl+L or Cmd+L lets you search without touching the mouse, and the emoji picker is built into both Windows and macOS. Linux desktops vary, so a few operating system rows may differ on yours.
Checking what a key sends
If a shortcut does nothing, a keyboard layout, a remapping app or a browser extension may be catching it first. The keycode tool linked below shows exactly which key and modifiers the browser receives, and the keyboard navigation tester checks that a page can be used without a mouse at all.
FAQ
What is the Mac equivalent of Ctrl+Alt+Delete?
Cmd+Option+Esc opens the Force Quit window, which is the closest match to the Windows Task Manager for closing a frozen app. For the full list of running processes, open Activity Monitor from Spotlight with Cmd+Space. There is no single combination that brings up a security screen as on Windows.
How do I take a screenshot of part of the screen?
On Windows, press Win+Shift+S and drag the area; the image goes to the clipboard and the Snipping Tool. On a Mac, press Cmd+Shift+4 and drag; the file is saved to the desktop, or add Ctrl to copy it to the clipboard instead. Cmd+Shift+5 opens the full screenshot and screen recording toolbar.
Can I print or share this shortcut list?
Yes. Print it for your desk or download the CSV or JSON for an onboarding guide or training handout. The table is written by OneTask and released under CC0, so you can copy and adapt it freely without asking or crediting.
