How the Paper and Photo Sizes works

This paper sizes chart lists every standard sheet, envelope and photo print size in one table, with the width and height in millimetres and inches and the aspect ratio. Search by name, such as A4 or Legal, or by use, such as envelope or poster, to find the exact dimensions for a document, frame or print order.

How to read the paper sizes chart

Sizes are listed portrait, width before height, except the business cards and Ledger, which are landscape by convention. ISO and JIS sizes are defined in whole millimetres, so their inch figures are rounded conversions. North American, ANSI, Arch and US photo sizes are defined in inches, so their millimetre figures are the exact conversion at 25.4 mm to the inch.

Why ISO sizes halve so neatly

Every ISO sheet has the ratio 1 to the square root of 2, about 1:1.414, so folding one in half gives the next size down with the same shape. A0 has an area of one square metre, and each step down halves it: A1 is half a square metre, A4 is one sixteenth. The B series sits between A sizes for posters and books, and the C series is sized for envelopes that fit the matching A sheet — a C4 envelope takes a flat A4 page and a DL takes A4 folded in three.

US sizes and drawing sizes

The US and Canada use Letter (8.5 × 11 in) and Legal (8.5 × 14 in) instead of A4. ANSI sizes start from Letter and double up to E, and architectural (Arch) sizes start from 9 × 12 in, so ANSI and Arch drawings of the same letter are not the same sheet. Letter is shorter and wider than A4, which is why documents made in one often clip or shrink when printed on the other.

Photo print sizes

Photo labs sell prints in inches in the US and in centimetres elsewhere, and neither matches a camera sensor exactly. A 4 × 6 print is 2:3, the shape of most DSLR photos, while 5 × 7 and 8 × 10 crop the sides. Compare the aspect ratio column with your image before ordering to see how much will be trimmed.

FAQ

What is A4 size in inches?

A4 is 210 × 297 mm, which is 8.27 × 11.69 inches. It is slightly narrower and about 0.7 inches taller than US Letter, which is 8.5 × 11 inches. Most printers handle both, but a page designed for one needs scaling to fit the other without clipped margins.

Which envelope fits an A4 sheet?

A C4 envelope (229 × 324 mm) holds an A4 sheet flat. C5 takes A4 folded in half, and C6 takes A4 folded in quarters. A DL envelope (110 × 220 mm) fits A4 folded in three, which is the usual choice for business letters in Europe.

What is the most common photo print size?

In the US it is 4 × 6 inches, and in most other countries the near-identical 10 × 15 cm. Both have a 2:3 aspect ratio, matching the frame of most interchangeable-lens cameras, so a photo prints without being cropped. Phones shoot 3:4, so expect some trimming.
