How the Video Upload Limits works

These video upload limits by platform show the longest video and the largest file you can post on YouTube, TikTok, X, Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook. Each row covers one account type or placement, with accepted formats, resolution notes and a link to the help page the figure came from.

How to use the video upload limits by platform

Find the platform and the way you are posting, because the limit often depends on both. YouTube caps unverified accounts at 15 minutes but lets verified ones upload for up to 12 hours. X gives free accounts 140 seconds and Premium subscribers four hours, but only on the web and iOS. TikTok allows longer uploads than recordings made in the app. Check the length column first, then the file size, since a long high-bitrate video can hit the size limit well before the time limit.

When the file is too big

If a video is within the length limit but over the size limit, lower the bitrate rather than the resolution. A 1080p video at 8 Mbps uses about 3.6 GB an hour, so a 10-minute clip is around 600 MB. The video bitrate calculator linked below works out the bitrate that fits a size target. Re-encoding to H.264 or HEVC in an MP4 container is the safest choice, as every platform here accepts it.

Aspect ratio

Vertical 9:16 fills the screen on TikTok, Reels and Shorts, while YouTube and LinkedIn desktop viewers see 16:9 best. Instagram accepts anything between 1.91:1 and 9:16 but crops the feed preview, so keep the subject centred.

Where the numbers come from

Every figure was read from the platform's own help centre on the date shown below the table. Where a platform publishes no file size limit, the table says so rather than repeating third-party guesses. Platforms change these limits often and sometimes roll them out gradually, so a limit can differ between accounts for a while.

FAQ

Which platform allows the longest videos?

YouTube, for verified accounts, at up to 12 hours or 256 GB, whichever comes first. X Premium and Facebook both allow around four hours, TikTok allows 60-minute uploads in the app, and LinkedIn and Instagram keep posts much shorter.

Why does my upload fail even though it is under the time limit?

It is usually the file size, an unsupported codec or a variable frame rate. Re-export as an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio at a constant frame rate, and lower the bitrate if the file is close to the size limit in the table.

Do ads have different limits from normal posts?

Yes. Ads go through a separate ad manager with its own rules, often a smaller file size and a fixed range of aspect ratios. The table includes TikTok in-feed ads and LinkedIn video ads, which both cap files at 500 MB.
