How the Anime Character Name Generator works
An anime character name generator for original characters, fan fiction, games and stories. Pick male or female and a style, and generate names that sound like they belong in a school comedy, a fantasy adventure or a dark thriller. Every name is built from real Japanese given names and surnames, arranged the way anime credits them.
How the anime character name generator works
Full names put the family name first, Kurokawa Ren or Hoshino Mio, which is the Japanese order and the one most anime use. Given name only is what friends call each other. Names with a nickname add the label classmates stick on a character, the "Prince" or "Sleepyhead". Cool one-word names are the kind rivals and mysterious transfer students go by, Kuro, Yoru or Zero. For surnames on their own, try the anime surname generator, and for traditional names with meanings, the Japanese name generator.
Names that fit a character
Anime names often hint at personality. Hikari means light and suits a cheerful lead, Yoru means night and suits a loner. Pick a name whose meaning quietly fits, and fans who know Japanese will notice.
FAQ
Why do anime names put the surname first?
Japanese names are written family name first, then given name. Many English subtitles swap the order, but the Japanese order is more common among fans now, so Kurokawa Ren reads as more authentic than Ren Kurokawa.
Are these real Japanese names?
Yes, the given names and surnames are real Japanese names, but the combinations are random. That keeps them original, so your character will not share a full name with a famous anime character.
What makes a name sound like an anime protagonist?
Protagonists tend to have short, bright given names like Sora, Haruto or Yui, paired with an ordinary surname. Rivals and villains more often get sharper names with meanings like darkness, frost or blade.
Can I use these for my original character?
Yes. Use them for OCs, fan fiction, roleplay, visual novels and games. Check that the full name does not match a well-known character if you plan to publish your story.
