How the Cat Name Generator works

This cat name generator gives a fresh list with every click. Generate cat and kitten names by coat and by gender in the shapes people actually use: Luna and Oliver as a human name, Mochi and Miso as a food, Smudge and Marmalade from the coat, Tabitha and Bartholomew as a grand name, and Sir Whiskers or Professor Purr as a joke title. Pick the gender, pick the coat, choose a style and generate up to a hundred.

Cat name generator: how the names are built

Cats are named in five shapes and two of them follow the coat, which is why the Coat select matters: a tabby gets Tigs and Stripes, a black cat gets Sooty and Midnight, a ginger gets Marmalade and Pumpkin, a white cat gets Snowy and Pearl, a tortoiseshell gets Patch and Mosaic, and a grey gets Smokey and Misty. The human-name form, Luna, Oliver, Lily, Leo, Bella, Milo, is the commonest and has been for twenty years, and cat names run a little more delicate than dog names on the same chart, with the soft vowels, Luna, Lily, Cleo, Willow, ahead of the hard ones, since a cat is called rather than shouted at. The food form, Mochi, Miso, Toffee, Sushi, Honey, Noodle, is the fond shape and leans sweeter and more eastern than the dog version, since a cat is small, neat and a little foreign, and the split by gender is the same habit, the sweet and the fruit for a female, the savoury and the bakery for a male. The coat-or-colour form, Smudge, Sooty, Marmalade, Snowy, Patch, Smokey, is the shape a cat gets on the first day, and it is the one most likely to be true for life, since a cat's coat does not change; it is also the shape that gets a second word, Sooty Paws, Ginger Socks, when the coat has a marking. The grand-or-old-fashioned form, Tabitha, Bartholomew, Persephone, Montgomery, Cleopatra, Reginald, is the cat's own shape, since a cat carries a four-syllable Victorian name with a dignity a dog cannot manage, and it is the name that gets shortened to Tabs or Monty within a week and restored in full when the cat is in trouble. And the joke-title form, Sir Whiskers, Professor Purr, Lady Fluffington, Captain Toebeans, is the family's shape, a rank given to a small animal because the mismatch is funny, and it works on a cat better than on any other pet because the cat behaves as if the rank were real.

The names, foods, coat words and titles are ordinary and the shapes shared, so a result is a new combination rather than anyone's actual cat, and cat names are not registered anywhere except for pedigree papers, where the breeder's prefix is a different thing; nothing here can clash. A cat name is also said at feeding time and to a vet, and cats answer to the tone more than the word, so the long grand names and joke titles are for the owner's pleasure and the everyday name is the first two syllables.

For a dog, the Dog name page; for any other animal, the Pet name page; for a horse, the Horse name page; for the houseplant the cat keeps knocking over, the Plant name page; and for the owner, the People section.

    FAQ

What are the most popular cat names?

Luna, Oliver, Milo, Leo, Bella, Lily, Max, Charlie, Willow and Cleo lead most countries' lists, with Smudge, Sooty and Marmalade the commonest coat names and Mochi and Miso the fastest-rising food names. The generator uses the same shapes with wider lists, so the results feel familiar without being the ten every street has.

What should I call a black cat, a ginger cat or a tabby?

Black cats get night and shadow names, Sooty, Midnight, Onyx, Jet, Velvet; gingers get marmalade and pumpkin names, Marmalade, Rusty, Copper, Tango; tabbies get stripe names, Tigs, Stripes, Mackerel, Smudge; whites get snow, torties get patch and mosaic, and greys get smoke and mist. The Coat select tunes the coat pool that way.

Do cats actually learn their names?

Yes, most cats recognise their own name and distinguish it from similar words, though they choose whether to respond. Two syllables with a long vowel, Luna, Milo, Mochi, Sooty, carry best, so keep the everyday name short and treat the grand name and the joke title as the one on the vet's form.

Why do cats get such grand names?

Because a cat behaves like a small aristocrat and the name fits the manner: Bartholomew, Persephone, Montgomery and Cleopatra suit a creature that sits on the best chair and ignores you. The grand names get shortened in practice, Monty, Percy, Tabs, Cleo, and the full version comes out only when the cat has done something.

Can I use these names for fiction or test data?

Yes. The names are combinations of common first names, foods, coat words, old-fashioned names and titles and belong to no one, and cat names are not registered or trademarked, so there is nothing to clash with. For a cat in a story, a game or a demo vet's database, use them freely.
