How the Drone Name Generator works

This drone name generator makes drone names: model designations such as Kestrel Mk III, HD-12 Gnat, Halcyon Dynamics Survey Drone Type 4 and Type 22 Hornet, swarm names such as Swarm Delta, the Third Flight, Hornet Group and Flight Sierra, operator nicknames such as Buzz, Little Pest, Old Wobbly and the Nuisance, and flight log entries such as Airframe 0412, Tail 7-Kilo and Unit 31 of Swarm Bravo. Generate up to a hundred at once for a whole swarm or the one drone an operator has grown fond of.

How the drone name generator works

A drone is a machine with no one aboard, so its name belongs to the factory, the formation, the operator or the log, and the generator gives all four. The model designation is the factory's, in the manner of the real aircraft, a bird and a mark, Kestrel Mk III, Shrike Mk I, Petrel Mk V, or a maker's code with an insect, HD-12 Gnat, OV-47 Hornet, TA-300 Mayfly, or the maker's full form, Halcyon Dynamics Survey Drone Type 4, Thorne Aerospace Strike Drone Type 2, or the role and mark, Recon Drone Mk II, Courier Drone Mk IV, or the bureaucrat's type, Type 22 Hornet, Type 9 Midge, since the small ones are named for insects and the fast ones for birds. The swarm name is the formation's, a phonetic letter, Swarm Delta, Flight Sierra, or an ordinal, the Third Flight, the Ninth Swarm, or the insect that the drones are, Hornet Group, Locust Swarm, Wasp Group, or the full address, the Second Swarm, Beetle Group, which is what the controller says when a hundred machines lift at once. The operator nickname is the one the person at the console gives, and operators name drones for being small and annoying, Buzz, Pest, Bug, the Nuisance, Ticker, Whizz, Flit, Blip, Speck, Mote, Little Pixie, Little Dart, or for the fault they have learned to live with, Old Wobbly, Shaky, Rattly, Drifty, Twitchy, Wonky, since a drone that comes back every time earns a name and a drone that does not earns a replacement. The flight log is the record, Airframe 0412, Airframe 7734-Kilo, Tail 7-Kilo, Unit 31 of Swarm Bravo, Delta 14, Survey, Recon 22, Third Flight, which is the drone as the log sees it, an airframe number and a slot in a formation.

Model designation gives the factory's. Swarm name gives the formation's. Operator nickname gives the console's. Flight log gives the record.

There is no gender option, since a drone has none and an operator's nickname is for a temperament rather than a person.

The lists are original. The birds and insects are real animals, the makers are the shared setting of this section, the codes and marks are ordinary aircraft forms, the phonetic alphabet is the real one and the nicknames are ordinary words; no published drone, swarm or franchise name appears in the lists, a match with a film, a series or a game would be chance, and a name intended for commercial use should be searched first.

For the machine big enough to walk, the mech name page; for the drone that stays on the ground and does the work, the robot name page; for the operator's own callsign, the callsign page; for the mind that runs the swarm, the AI name page; and for the maker on the airframe, the megacorp page.

    FAQ

What is a drone model designation?

The factory's, in the manner of the real aircraft, a bird and a mark, Kestrel Mk III, or a maker's code with an insect, HD-12 Gnat, or the full form, Halcyon Dynamics Survey Drone Type 4, or the type, Type 22 Hornet, since the small ones are named for insects and the fast ones for birds. The Model designation kind gives it.

    What is a swarm name?

The formation's, a phonetic letter, Swarm Delta, Flight Sierra, or an ordinal, the Third Flight, or the insect that the drones are, Hornet Group, Locust Swarm, or the full address, the Second Swarm, Beetle Group, which is what the controller says when a hundred machines lift at once. The Swarm name kind gives it.

    What is an operator nickname?

The one the person at the console gives, for being small and annoying, Buzz, Pest, the Nuisance, Blip, Little Pixie, or for the fault they have learned to live with, Old Wobbly, Twitchy, Wonky, since a drone that comes back every time earns a name and one that does not earns a replacement. The Operator nickname kind gives it.

What is a flight log entry?

The record, Airframe 0412, Tail 7-Kilo, Unit 31 of Swarm Bravo, Delta 14, Survey, Recon 22, Third Flight, which is the drone as the log sees it, an airframe number and a slot in a formation, with no room for a name. The Flight log kind gives it.

Are any of these names from published works?

No. Every list is original. The birds and insects are real animals, the makers are the shared setting of this section, the codes and marks are ordinary aircraft forms, the phonetic alphabet is real and the nicknames are ordinary words, so no published drone or swarm name appears in them, a match would be chance, and a name meant for commercial use should be searched first.
