How the First Name Generator works
This first name generator gives you real given names from 12 countries, for women and men: English names like Florence and Alfie, Irish names like Saoirse and Oisín, Scottish names like Eilidh and Lachlan, plus Welsh, American, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Scandinavian, Dutch and Polish names, all spelled the way they are at home.
How the first name generator works
Choose an origin and a gender, or leave either on Any. Each result is a name commonly given in that country, drawn without repeats, with accents kept (Lucía, Chloé, Bjørn, Mikołaj) because dropping them changes the name. Pair a result with a family name from the surname generator, or get both at once from the full name generator.
Picking a believable name for a character
A first name dates a character as well as placing them. The names here are ones in current or recent use, so they suit a contemporary setting. A Polish grandmother is more likely to be a Małgorzata than a Zuzanna, and an American man born in the 1990s more likely a Tyler than an Easton. For older generations, lean on the classic names in each list.
Names that cross borders
Some names here appear in several countries, like Emma, Sophie and Lucas, because they travel easily between languages. Others are firmly local: Tadhg, Mhairi and Llŷr are hard to place anywhere but Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Choose a local name to make a setting obvious and a shared one to keep it open.

FAQ
How do you pronounce Irish names like Saoirse and Oisín?
Saoirse is said SEER-sha, Oisín is uh-SHEEN, Niamh is NEEV, Caoimhe is KEE-va and Tadhg is TIGE (rhyming with tiger without the r). Irish spelling follows its own rules, so the letters rarely match English sounds.
What is the most common first name in the world?
Muhammad, in its various spellings, is thought to be the most common given name in the world. Among European languages, forms of John (Juan, Jean, Giovanni, Jan) and Maria are the most widespread.
Are these names real?
Yes. Every name in the lists is a real given name in common use in its country, not an invented one, so they work for characters, games and placeholder data.
