    How the Gamertag Generator works

Use this gamertag generator to fill a shortlist in seconds. Generate original gamertags in the shapes players actually use: GrimVoltage and SnipeLord as compounds, xShadowKestrelx wrapped in x's, Nyx_Reaper with an underscore, ToxicHeron77 with a number, or a short coined tag like Kaelix. Every result is twelve characters or fewer, so it fits Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Battle.net and every launcher. Choose a style and generate up to a hundred.

Gamertag generator: the patterns behind each name

A gamertag is a username with a swagger requirement. It is read aloud in lobbies, shouted in voice chat and shown on a killcam, so it needs to be short, hard to mishear and slightly threatening, and the shapes here are the ones a decade of console lobbies settled on. The compound, an adjective and a noun in CamelCase with no separator, GrimVoltage, VoidBadger, FrostViper, is the default and the most legible; the verb-plus-noun form, SnipeLord, CrushHawk, RushTitan, is its more aggressive cousin. The x-wrapped tag, xShadowKestrelx, xXRavenXx, is the oldest console convention, born on the original Xbox Live when a good name was always taken and the x's were the way round it, and it is now half ironic, worn by players who know exactly what it says about them. The underscore pair, Nyx_Reaper, Ghost_Warden, is the PC and Steam habit, and the number suffix, ToxicHeron77, RavenKing42, is what you add when the plain form is gone, with the numbers players actually pick, 7, 42, 77, 99, 360, rather than a random string.

Every result here is twelve characters or fewer. Xbox allows twelve before it appends a numeric suffix, PlayStation sixteen, Steam has no limit but truncates display names in most game lobbies, and Nintendo ten, so twelve is the length that fits without being cut. The word lists are sharp-sounding English words with hard consonants, Grim, Toxic, Void, Reaper, Viper, Havoc, Vortex, and the one-word tags are coined to sound like them, Kaelix, Drazen, Torvik, Vexis, with none of them being an existing character or brand; the game-specific pages, Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, and the Xbox and PlayStation pages, tighten the rules further for their platforms.

If the tag you like is taken, the platform will usually offer it with a number appended; try the underscore or x-wrapped form of the same words first, which is what the style select is for. For a whole squad, the Clan tag page; for a streaming identity, the Twitch page; and for a softer or funnier handle for a non-competitive game, the Cute and Funny username pages in this section.

    FAQ

How long can a gamertag be?

Xbox allows twelve characters before it adds a number suffix, PlayStation sixteen, Nintendo ten, and Steam has no hard limit but most in-game lobbies cut display names short. Everything here is twelve or fewer, so it fits all of them uncut.

Why do so many gamertags have x's?

Because on the original Xbox Live every plain word was taken within months and wrapping it in x's made it unique. It became the signature shape of console gaming and is now used knowingly; the X-wrapped option gives it to you if you want it.

    Are these tags taken?

Some plain compounds will be on the biggest platforms, since they are made from common words. The numbered, underscore and x-wrapped forms are usually free, and the coined one-word tags, Kaelix, Torvik, Vexis, are the safest of all.

Can I change my gamertag later?

On Xbox the first change is free and later ones cost a small fee; PlayStation allows changes with the first free; Steam names change any time. Pick one you will still like in a year, since your friends list will know you by it.

Can I use these names for fiction or test data?

Yes. The tags are fresh combinations of common words and coined names and cannot be owned. For a character in a story about gaming they are exactly right; for a public competitive identity, search the tag first to avoid an established player with the same one.
