How the Kazakh Name Generator works
This Kazakh name generator gives first names popular in Kazakhstan, such as Nursultan, Alikhan, Aruzhan and Tomiris, with surnames in the Soviet-era -ov and -ova form and the newer Kazakh -uly and -kyzy form. Use it for characters, games and baby name ideas.
How the Kazakh name generator builds surnames
Most Kazakh surnames were formed in the Soviet period by adding the Russian endings -ov or -ev for men and -ova or -eva for women to a grandfather's or father's name, as in Nurlanov or Serikbayeva. Since independence in 1991, many Kazakhs have chosen the traditional Kazakh endings instead: -uly, son of, for men, and -kyzy, daughter of, for women, as in Abaiuly or Nurlankyzy. The generator offers both.
Kazakh first names
Kazakh first names draw on Turkic, Arabic and Persian roots. Many describe nature or qualities: Aisulu means moon-beautiful, Akbota white camel calf, Saule ray of light and Bauyrzhan brave. Historic figures inspire others, such as Tomiris, the Saka queen said to have defeated Cyrus the Great, and Abylai, the eighteenth-century khan. Aruzhan, Alikhan and Inkar have topped recent baby charts.

FAQ
What does -uly mean in Kazakh surnames?
Uly means son of, and kyzy means daughter of. A man called Abaiuly is the son of Abai. Since the 1990s many Kazakhs have adopted these endings instead of Russian -ov and -ova.
What are popular Kazakh baby names?
In recent years Alikhan, Nurislam, Aisultan and Raiymbek have been popular for boys, and Aruzhan, Ayala, Raiana and Kausar for girls. Older classic names such as Nurlan, Serik, Aigerim and Gulnara are still common among adults.
Do Kazakhs use patronymics?
Yes. On Russian-style documents a Kazakh may have a patronymic such as Serikovich or Serikovna, while the Kazakh form puts the father's name with -uly or -kyzy, which can also serve as a surname.
