How the Lithuanian Name Generator works
This Lithuanian name generator gives first names popular in Lithuania, such as Lukas, Matas, Emilija and Gabija, with surnames in the right form for men, married women and unmarried women, since a Lithuanian surname changes ending depending on who carries it.
How the Lithuanian name generator handles surnames
A Lithuanian family name has several forms. A man's surname ends in -as, -is, -us or -a, as in Kazlauskas. His wife traditionally takes the ending -ienė, becoming Kazlauskienė, and his unmarried daughter takes -aitė, -ytė, -utė or -ūtė, becoming Kazlauskaitė. Since 2003 women can also choose a neutral form ending in -ė, such as Kazlauskė, which does not show marital status. The generator gives each of these, so a whole family can share one root correctly.
Lithuanian first names
Many Lithuanian names come from the country's pagan and grand-ducal past: Vytautas, Mindaugas, Gediminas, Algirdas and Kęstutis were rulers, and girls' names like Saulė, the sun, Rūta, rue, and Eglė, the fir tree, come from nature and folklore. Recent baby lists favour short international names such as Lukas, Kajus, Emilija and Lėja.

FAQ
Why do Lithuanian surnames change for women?
Lithuanian is an inflected Baltic language, and surnames take feminine endings that also showed marital status: -ienė for a wife and -aitė, -ytė or -utė for a daughter. The neutral -ė form is now a legal alternative.
What is the most common Lithuanian surname?
Kazlauskas is the most common Lithuanian surname, followed by Jankauskas, Petrauskas, Stankevičius and Vasiliauskas. Many common surnames end in -auskas, a Lithuanian form of Polish -owski style names.
Do Lithuanian first names have to end in -as or -a?
Traditionally, male names end in -as, -is, -us or -ys and female names in -a or -ė, so even foreign names are adapted, which is why John becomes Jonas and the footballer Messi is written Mesis.
