How the Motorcycle Name Generator works
This motorcycle name generator gives a fresh list with every click. Generate pet names for a motorcycle in the shapes riders actually use: Betty and Roxanne as a human name, Black Betty and Silver Scarlet from a colour, The Widow and The Missile as a menace word, Thunder and Banshee from the sound it makes, and Iron Horse or Bandit as a horse or outlaw name. Pick the type of bike, choose a style and generate up to a hundred.
Motorcycle name generator: how the names are built
A motorcycle gets a name more often than a car does, because a bike is ridden rather than driven and a rider talks to it, and the name falls into one of five shapes, which is why the Bike select matters: a cruiser gets Betty and Thunder, a sports bike gets Scarlet and the Missile, a café racer gets Vivienne and the Gentleman, an adventure bike gets Bruce and the Mule, a scooter gets Peggy and Buzz, and a dirt bike gets Rocco and the Goat. The human-name form, Betty, Roxanne, Delilah, Marlowe, Duke, is the commonest and is mostly a woman's name on a cruiser and a short hard name on a sports bike, since the cruiser is a partner and the sports bike is a weapon; a café racer gets a name from the decade it imitates, so Vivienne and Rupert rather than Roxy and Jett. The colour-and-name form, Black Betty, Silver Scarlet, the Red Widow, Chrome Hog, is the shape of the bike named at first sight, and it is the one that survives repainting worst and so is usually kept out of loyalty. The The-and-a-menace-word form, the Widow, the Beast, the Missile, the Mule, the Bee, is the ironic shape, since a scooter called the Beast and a cruiser called the Bee are both jokes and both stick, while the Widowmaker on a sports bike is meant. The sound-or-speed form, Thunder, Rumble, Banshee, Purr, Buzz, Rip, is the shape of the bike named for its exhaust, and it is the truest, since a big twin really does rumble, a four-cylinder sports bike really does scream, and a moped really does buzz. And the horse-or-outlaw form, Iron Horse, Bandit, Mustang, Rogue, Nomad, is the oldest, since a motorcycle has been called an iron horse since before it had a rider's licence, and the outlaw names carry the romance the rider bought the bike for.
The names, colours, menace words and sounds are ordinary and the shapes shared, so a result is a new combination rather than anyone's actual bike, and bike pet names are not registered anywhere, so nothing here can clash with anything; the only test is whether the name gets said in the garage. A bike name is also shouted over an engine and painted on a tank, so the shapes here are one or two words, and the grand ones shorten fast.

FAQ
Why do riders name their motorcycles?
Because a motorcycle is ridden with the whole body and talked to on every corner, so it gets a personality faster than a car does, and because bikers have named their machines since the first ones, when a motorcycle was an iron horse and a horse always had a name. Surveys of riders find most name their bike within the first month.
Should a motorcycle have a female name?
Most cruisers and classics do, following the old habit of naming ships and machines as she, but sports bikes and dirt bikes increasingly get short hard names, Jett, Rocco, Axel, or no gender at all, Thunder, the Missile. The generator gives both, and the Bike select tilts the pool the way riders of each type tend to.
How do I pick a name that suits my bike?
Listen to it first, since the sound is the honest name, then look at the colour and think about what it is for. A black cruiser that rumbles is Black Betty or Thunder, a red sports bike that screams is Scarlet or the Missile, a scooter that buzzes is Peggy or the Bee, and a dirt bike that goes anywhere is the Goat.
What about a scooter or a moped?
A scooter gets the small affectionate shapes, Peggy, Alfie, Buzz, the Bee, Pony, and the joke is always available, so a fifty cc moped called the Beast or Thunder is a name that gets a laugh at every set of lights. The Scooter or moped setting keeps the names small and fond rather than menacing.
Can I use these names for fiction or test data?
Yes. The names are combinations of common first names, colours, menace words, sounds and outlaw words and belong to no one, and motorcycle pet names are not registered or trademarked, so there is nothing to clash with. For a bike in a story, a game or a demo garage, use them freely.
