How the Nebula Name Generator works
This nebula name generator makes nebula names: shape names such as the Lantern Nebula, the Serpent's Eye Nebula and the Chalice of Callix, colour names such as the Crimson Shroud, the Ashen Nebula and the Violet Veil of Veyra, catalogue numbers such as NGC-7712, Sharpless 4471 and Barnard-903, and spacer's names such as the Cinder Cloud, the Widow's Veil, the Drowned Fog and the Ember Wall. Generate up to a hundred at once for a chart, a hiding place or a hazard on the jump route.
How the nebula name generator works
A nebula is the sci-fi cloud that hides a fleet, blinds a sensor and gives a chapter its light, and the generator names it four ways. The shape name is the astronomer's, since the real nebulae are named for what the eye makes of them, a thing with Nebula after it, the Lantern Nebula, the Anvil Nebula, the Hourglass Nebula, the Lock Nebula, the Bell Nebula, the Skull Nebula, the Heron Nebula, the Gate Nebula, or a being and its part, the Widow's Eye Nebula, the Serpent's Mouth Nebula, the Pilgrim's Lantern Nebula, the Sleeper's Shroud Nebula, or the thing placed near a star of the shared setting of this section, the Chalice of Callix, the Crown of Seraphis. The colour name is the one the crews use when the shape is no help, a colour and a cloud word, the Crimson Shroud, the Ashen Cloud, the Amber Veil, the Violet Mist, the Cobalt Wall, the Silver Drift, the Rust Bank, the Sable Curtain, the Saffron Haze, or the colour with Nebula, the Emerald Nebula, the Ochre Nebula, or placed near a star, the Violet Veil of Veyra, the Pale Mist of Thule. The catalogue number is the survey's, a prefix and a number in the manner of the real nebula catalogues, NGC-7712, IC 4471, Sharpless-903, RCW 2201, Gum-77, Barnard 3390, LDN-1547, Abell-812, which is how the navigator files it. The spacer's name is what the crews call a nebula they have reason to fear or use, an adjective and a cloud word, the Drowned Fog, the Cinder Cloud, the Cold Shoal, the Burning Sea, the Silent Bank, the Hungry Mist, the Blind Reach, the Sleeping Wall, or the star with the cloud word, the Kestrine Drift, the Tarsis Shroud, or a being with it, the Widow's Veil, the Hermit's Smoke, the Drowned Man's Fog, since a spacer's name for a cloud says what happened to the last ship that went in.
Shape name gives the astronomer's. Colour name gives the crew's plain one. Catalogue number gives the survey's. Spacer's name gives the one with a story in it.
There is no gender option, since a nebula has none.
The lists are original. The shapes, beings and colours are built for this page in the manner of the real nebula names and are not the names of any real or published nebula, the stars are the shared setting of this section, and the catalogue prefixes are the real ones with random numbers; a match with a novel, a series or a game would be chance, and a name intended for commercial use should be searched first.
