How the PlayStation ID Generator works
This PlayStation id generator makes PlayStation online IDs in the shapes PSN has: Ghost-Otter and The-Silent-Raven hyphenated, Frost_Lynx and x_Otto_x underscored, VoidKestrel and RustyBadger42 as compounds, Otto-Plays and Nell_Snipes as a name and a verb, or a coined one-word ID like Kaelix. Every result is between three and sixteen characters of letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, which is what Sony allows, and none starts with a number or a symbol. Choose a style and generate up to a hundred.
How the PlayStation id generator works
A PlayStation online ID is three to sixteen characters, starting with a letter, using letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, with no spaces, and it must be unique across PSN. The hyphen is what gives PSN names their look. Xbox allows a space and Steam allows anything, but on PlayStation the only way to separate two words is a hyphen or an underscore, so the platform's classic form is Ghost-Otter, The-Silent-Raven, Frost-Lynx-7, a hyphenated pair that almost no other platform produces; the underscore version, Frost_Lynx, x_Otto_x, is the same shape in a different voice, and the compound, VoidKestrel, RustyBadger42, is the gamertag style carried over. The name-and-verb, Otto-Plays, Nell_Snipes, is the streamer form, and the coined one-word ID, Kaelix, Torvik, Vexis, is the one most likely to be free on a network that has been full since 2006.
Since 2019 an online ID can be changed, the first time free and afterwards for a fee, but the change carries a warning: games released before 2018 were not built for it, and in some of them the old ID persists or saves and purchases can misbehave, so Sony publishes a list of which games cope. The old ID can be displayed beside the new one for a while so friends recognise you, and you can revert to it once for free. The word lists here are sharp English words, animals, short first names and coined names, and nothing here is an existing ID, only a name in the style; every result stays under sixteen characters at its longest.
For the same person on Xbox, where a space replaces the hyphen, the Xbox gamertag page; for the PC identity beside it, the Steam page; and for the short tag shown in front of a whole squad, the Clan tag page in this section.
FAQ
What are the PSN online ID rules?
Three to sixteen characters, starting with a letter, using letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores only, no spaces, unique across PSN. Sony also rejects IDs that contain offensive words or impersonate its own staff or brands.
Can I change my PSN ID?
Yes, since 2019, from the console or the PlayStation website. The first change is free and later ones cost a fee. Games released before April 2018 may not fully support a changed ID, so check the compatibility list first.
Why do PSN names use hyphens?
Because PSN allows no spaces and a hyphen is the readable way to split two words: Ghost-Otter reads better than GhostOtter to many people. The hyphen has become the network's signature and marks an ID as PlayStation-first.
Can I use the same name as my Xbox gamertag?
Usually, with the space replaced by a hyphen or removed: Ghost Otter becomes Ghost-Otter or GhostOtter. The character limit is sixteen rather than twelve, so an Xbox tag always fits, though the PSN version must still be unique.
Can I use these names for fiction or test data?
Yes. The IDs are fresh combinations of common words, first names and coined names and cannot be owned. For a real account, the sign-up screen checks availability as you type; for a fictional player in a story, use them freely.
