How the Samoan Name Generator works

This Samoan name generator gives Samoan first names, such as Sione, Tavita, Malia and Losa, with Samoan family names like Tuilagi and Faleolo. The matai option adds a chief title before the name, as in Samoan custom, for characters, games and baby name ideas.

How the Samoan name generator builds names

Many Samoan first names are Samoan forms of biblical and English names brought by missionaries in the nineteenth century: Sione is John, Tavita David, Ioane John, Malia Mary and Losa Rose. Others are Samoan words, such as Alofa, love, Fetu, star, and Lagi, sky. Family names often began as a father's or ancestor's name or a chiefly title, which is why Ioane and Leota can be both first and last names.

    Matai titles

Samoan society is organised around the fa'amatai, the system of chiefs. An extended family bestows a matai title on a chosen member, who then places it before their name, so Sione Tuilagi might become Tuiasosopo Sione Tuilagi. Titles belong to the family and its land, not to the person, and both women and men can hold them. The matai option generates names in that form.

    FAQ

What are common Samoan last names?

Common Samoan surnames include Faleolo, Tuilagi, Leota, Ioane, Aumua and Seiuli. Many began as a forebear's first name or a chiefly title, so they may change from one generation to the next in traditional families.

    What does Sione mean?

Sione is the Samoan form of John, used widely in Samoa and Tonga. Samoan has no j sound, so John became Sione and James became Semisi in Tongan and Samisoni in some families.

Can a woman hold a matai title?

Yes. A family can give a matai title to a woman, and many women hold high titles, including Fiame Naomi Mata'afa, who became Samoa's first female prime minister in 2021.
