How the Sci-fi Character Name Generator works

This sci-fi character name generator gives a fresh list with every click. Generate science fiction character names: plain names such as Ilsa Marrow, Orin Vasq and Kael Okonkwo-Reyes, names with a rank such as Commander Sela Onne and Dr. Dorian Ekwueme, names with a homeworld such as Tamsin Halloran of Tarsis and Maren Voss, born on Meridian Station, and names with a callsign such as Corvin "Hatchet" Draven and Lieutenant Nyx "Static" Ryker. Choose female, male or either and generate up to a hundred at once.

Sci-fi character name generator: how the names are built

A science fiction character is usually a human a few centuries on, and the generator names one the way most space opera does, with a given name and a surname from anywhere on Earth, since a starship crew is drawn from the whole planet and its colonies. The given names are short and clear over a comms channel, Ilsa, Sela, Tamsin, Maren, Nyx, Wren, Juno for the women, Orin, Kael, Dorian, Corvin, Jace, Thane, Idris for the men, and the surnames come from every continent, Marrow, Vasq, Onne, Okonkwo, Reyes, Tanaka, Lindqvist, Mbeki, Castellan, Nakamura, Sørlie, Adeyemi, Kowalczyk, Ferreira, sometimes doubled with a hyphen in the colonial manner, Okonkwo-Reyes, Voss-Tanaka. The rank is naval or marine, since most sci-fi crews are organised like a navy, Captain, Commander, Lieutenant, Ensign, Admiral, Commodore, Flight Officer, or a doctorate for the ship's surgeon and the science lead, and a post can follow, first officer, chief engineer, navigator, quartermaster, comms officer. The homeworld is a planet, station or colony of the shared setting of this section, Tarsis, Callix, Meridian Station, Veyra, Halden, Cinder, Nova Ostia, Port Calder, the Oberon Reach, or Earth, Luna and the Belt for the near future. The callsign is the pilot's or marine's nickname, one word, in quotes between the given name and the surname, Ledger, Ghost, Hatchet, Static, Pilgrim, Rook, Vesper, Torch, Anvil, Deadeye, Fathom, Nomad.

Plain name gives the name alone or hyphenated. Name with rank gives the rank, the doctorate or the post. Name with homeworld gives the world. Name with callsign gives the nickname, alone or in the full name.

The gender option splits the given names and leaves surnames, ranks, worlds and callsigns shared, since in the far future none of those carry a gender.

The lists are original. The given names and surnames are ordinary names from many languages rather than the names of any published character, the ranks are the real naval ones, the worlds are coined for this section, and the callsigns are coined for this page; a match with a novel, a series or a game would be chance, and a name intended for commercial use should be searched first.

For the surname alone, the sci-fi surname page; for the pilot's nickname in depth, the callsign page; for the non-human crew member, the alien name page; and for the machine, the android page.

    FAQ

What is a plain sci-fi character name?

A given name and a surname drawn from across the world, since a starship crew is drawn from the whole planet, Ilsa Marrow, Orin Vasq, Kael Okonkwo, Tamsin Lindqvist, sometimes hyphenated in the colonial manner, Okonkwo-Reyes. The Plain name kind gives it.

    What ranks does it use?

Naval and marine ranks, since most sci-fi crews are organised like a navy, Captain, Commander, Lieutenant, Ensign, Admiral, Commodore, Flight Officer, Warrant Officer, or a doctorate, and sometimes a post, first officer, chief engineer, navigator. The Name with rank kind gives them.

    What is a homeworld name?

The name with the planet, station or colony the character was born on, drawn from the shared setting of this section, Tamsin Halloran of Tarsis, Maren Voss, born on Meridian Station, Orin Vasq, Callix-born, or Earth, Luna and the Belt. The Name with homeworld kind gives it.

    What is a callsign name?

A pilot's or marine's one-word nickname in quotes between given name and surname, Corvin "Hatchet" Draven, Nyx "Static" Ryker, or on its own. The Name with callsign kind gives it, and the callsign page has more of them.

Are any of these names from published works?

No. Every list is original. The given names and surnames are ordinary names from many languages, the ranks are real naval ranks, and the worlds and callsigns are coined for this section, so a match with a novel, a series or a game would be chance, and a name meant for commercial use should be searched first.
