How the Sci-fi Surname Generator works

This sci-fi surname generator is free and makes a new batch each time. Generate science fiction surnames: Earth surnames such as Marrow, Okonkwo and Lindqvist, colonial double surnames such as Okonkwo-Reyes and Tarsis-Calder, coined future surnames such as Voxell, Orenne and Kestrine, and surnames taken from a ship, a station or a world such as Marrowind, Ledger and Veyra-born. Generate up to a hundred at once and pair them with any given name.

Sci-fi surname generator: where the names come from

A surname says where a family has been, and in science fiction that is the interesting part, since a family may have been on three planets and a generation ship. The generator gives four kinds. The Earth surname is an ordinary one from anywhere on the planet, since a starship crew is drawn from the whole world, Marrow, Vasq, Okonkwo, Reyes, Tanaka, Lindqvist, Mbeki, Castellan, Nakamura, Sørlie, Adeyemi, Kowalczyk, Delacroix, Haddad, Nguyen, Osei, Rasmussen, Singh, Varga, Zhou, and it reads as the near future, where nothing has changed but the address. The colonial double surname is two Earth names joined with a hyphen, or an Earth name joined to a world, since colonies mix families and a settler's descendants add the world to the name, Okonkwo-Reyes, Voss-Tanaka, Tarsis-Calder, Halloran-Veyra, Quade-Voxell. The coined future surname is built from a start and an end syllable, or drawn from a list of finished coinages, so that it sounds like a surname that drifted a few centuries from anything on Earth, Voxell, Orenne, Kestrine, Talith, Marrowe, Solance, Caldix, Verath, Ashwick, Dorran, Rylard, Quintell, Nevock, Cormund, Lunova. The ship or world surname is the one a family takes from where it came from, since a child born on the Ledger or on Marrowind may carry that name, Marrowind, Tarsis, Veyra, Seraphis, Cassian, Dawnborn, Ledger, Resolve, Horizon, Wanderer, Lantern, Covenant, Ember, or the world with born after it, Callix-born, Luna-born.

Earth surname gives the ordinary name. Colonial double surname gives the hyphenated pair. Coined future surname gives the drifted coinage. Ship or world surname gives the name taken from a place.

There is no gender option, since a surname does not carry one.

The lists are original. The Earth surnames are ordinary family names from many languages rather than the names of any published character, the coined surnames are built for this page, and the worlds and ships are the shared setting of this section; a match with a novel, a series or a game would be chance, and a name intended for commercial use should be searched first.
